Maybrit Illner (ZDF) on the 2021 federal election: "We will not throw cotton balls at each other"

Who will be Chancellor? The cardinal question was also about Maybrit Illner on ZDF. Katrin Göring-Eckardt flirts with the FDP – but also warns of “tough negotiations.”

Berlin / Frankfurt – After the election is before the exploratory talks, especially after a result that leaves numerous coalition options open. The question of who will hopefully rule the country soon (and not until next year) turned to Maybrit Illner’s broadcast on Wednesday evening. On the subject of “Scholz or Laschet – who are the Greens and FDP making chancellor?”, Peter Altmaier from the CDU, incumbent Federal Minister of Economics, emphasized that the voters have made their decisions and that the Union would be humble in the face of the worst election result in its history.

Maybrit Illner on the 2021 federal election: Altmaier calls for humility from Union

“We have to recognize that the Union is the party that has lost the most votes. We are not complaining about government claims, but we are available. ”Altmaier did not want to contradict Markus Söder’s statement that after this election result the Union had no moral claim to the Chancellery. No wonder, since he strongly advocated the Bavarian Prime Minister as candidate for Chancellor.

Markus Feldenkirchen, author in the Spiegel office in the capital, pointed out that the SPD’s result was just at the level of 2013. The SPD has gained a small lead, but Olaf Scholz is still a long way from sitting in the Chancellery. Especially since not only the FDP is toying with both former popular parties, but also the Greens. Four years ago they were already quite open to a Jamaica alliance that it was not because of them but the FDP that failed.

Maybrit Illner-Talk (ZDF) on the result of the federal election in 2021: Greens are vying for favor with the FDP

Johannes Vogel, FDP, deputy party chairman, said that the Merkel era ended with a new spectrum of parties: two parties that were no longer very large, plus two smaller ones that are almost medium-sized. From this it is now a matter of forging a functioning alliance that will lead the country into the future, the digital one, but also otherwise.

Katrin Göring-Eckardt, leader of the Greens in the Bundestag, made a similar campaign speech and asked the big questions: Which party is suitable for the highest offices? Which one is with you? Which one has an idea in which direction Germany should develop? Göring-Eckardt meant the Greens, of course, and continued the flirtation with the FDP, also emphasizing that especially young people, especially many first-time voters, have voted for the Greens and the FDP. Nevertheless, with a view to talks with the SPD, she made it clear that one would not “throw cotton balls” at oneself. “These will be tough negotiations.”

SPD Minister Hubertus Heil at Maybrit Illner (ZDF): SPD would like a traffic light coalition after the federal election in 2021

Hubertus Heil, SPD, deputy party chairman and federal minister for labor and social affairs, quite blatantly hinted at Maybrit Illner (ZDF) that the SPD no longer wanted to form a grand coalition with the CDU, but rather a traffic light with the Greens and the FDP, or as it has been called for a few days: to form a citrus coalition.

Robin Alexander, deputy editor-in-chief of “Die Welt”, emphasized that the train for Jamaica has not yet left completely, noting that Laschet actually only has one chance to continue his political career: the Chancellery. And this situation gives the Greens and FDP considerable power when they look for new opportunities if the traffic lights fail.

Finally, Göring-Eckardt emphasized an important aspect at Maybrit Illner (ZDF): Regardless of which coalition will soon govern the country, it will not be possible to reorganize the country without the other democratic parties. Which means: Necessary decisions and decisions can only be made through cooperation in the Federal Council.

But before that are the coalition negotiations, which will be difficult enough. Would Angela Merkel be happy if it took time for her to be replaced? If the negotiations and the swearing-in of the new chancellor lasted until December 17th, Merkel would replace Helmut Kohl as the record holder. But that is unlikely to play a role in the discussions between the SPD, Greens, FDP – and perhaps also the CDU. (Michael Meyns)
