Nanotechnology against counterfeits

falsificacionesHow can we know that a20 euro billyes it isauthentic, that aPicasso is it really a Picasso, or that what they sell us as a Louis Vuitton bag is not a crasscopy? Researchers fromNanophotonic Technology Centerof the Polytechnic University of Valencia have come to our aid and have just patented a newoptical security nano-tag systemusing photonic metamaterials.

Optical labels are the “marks” that are inserted almost imperceptibly, for example, on euro banknotes or documents such as the DNI to guarantee their authenticity. However, the materials with which they are currently manufactured do not guarantee that there are no counterfeits, a drawback that could be avoided with the incorporation of thenew photonic metamaterials. Placed on a certain object (a ticket, a document, etc.), they allow to give it truthfulness and prevent its falsification, according to the researchers in the magazineApplied Physics Letter.

Likewise, the application of these newoptical nano security labelsis of special interest in objects of high value such aspieces of art or haute couture garments and accessoriesof which you want to guarantee their authenticity and avoid copies.

With this new invention thecounterfeitersthey have it really difficult. ? It is very difficult to produce a metamaterial with magnetism at these frequencies, since the most advanced nanofabrication tools are used for this ,? adds Alejandro Martínez, co-author of the research.
