The astronaut and aeronautical engineer Pedro Duque has been appointed as the new Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities of the Spanish Government of Pedro Sánchez, formed as a result of the motion of censure that was approved a few days ago.
The man from Madrid is known for being the first Spanish astronaut, and has worked at the Higher Technical School of Aeronautical Engineers and at the European Space Agency (ESA).
Pedro Duque has traveled to space twice. In recent years he had been working as an astronaut at the European Space Agency, where he has been responsible for the Office of Flight Operations and the review of projects for manned flights.
The new minister has received various distinctions in recognition of his professional career, including the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in 1999.
