On September 21, 2008, the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest particle accelerator, was inaugurated. At the LHC, the first proton collisions took place to recreate the birth of the universe
The LHC is located at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) and its large tunnel of 27 km in circumference is buried about 100 meters below the French-Swiss border. In these 11 years of LHC we have been able to advance in the knowledge of the composition of matter and the universe.
The great milestone of the LHC occurred in 2012: the verification of the existence of the Higgs boson, an essential subatomic particle that allows us to understand how particles obtain mass.
The Higgs boson was named as the greatest discovery of the year by the journal Science and Javier Santaolalla, engineer, doctor in particle physics and science popularizer, was privileged to be present. Javier tells us some interesting facts about what the LHC is and what is done inside it , in addition to explaining conceptually what the Higgs boson is.
Note: this video was made in September 2018; therefore, the reference of the years that the LHC fulfills may vary.
