A new hypothesis in which an international team of scientists is working makes us evoke the plot of director Christopher Nolan’s science fiction film, “Interstellar”: what if our galaxy, the Milky Way, was a gigantic wormhole that allowed travel in space and time? The conclusions of this research have been published in the Annals of Physics journal.
Thanks to this film, it is true that interest in space-time tunnels or wormholes has grown exponentially , but the truth is that astrophysicists have been theorizing about them for many years.
“What we tried to do in our study was solve the equation that astrophysicist ‘Murph’ (the role played by Jessica Chastain) was working on. It is evident that we did it long before the film came out and it is, in fact, an extremely interesting problem for dark matter studies ”, clarifies Paolo Salucci, an astrophysicist at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste (Italy). ) and expert in dark matter.
To arrive at this conjecture, astrophysicists combined the equations of general relativity with a very detailed map of the distribution of dark matter in the Milky Way, which makes the scientific community rethink the possibility that dark matter could be another dimension or a major galactic transportation system . Thus, according to this hypothesis, this new situation would allow the possibility of traveling through this space-time tunnel since, according to the predicted calculations, it could be navigable, as happens in the movie “ Interstellar” .
Is it an affirmation? Salucci clarifies that no but, “ could it ever be experimentally tested? In principle, we could test it by comparing two galaxies, ours and another very close one, like, for example, the Magellanic Cloud, but we are still very far from any real possibility of making such a comparison ”.
