If you are lazy to recycle, Newcastle University (United Kingdom) could have an effective solution. It’s called “BinCam” and it’s a tiny camera placed in the garbage can that takes a photo every time the lid is lifted and uploaded to the Facebook social network. In this way, monitor if we separate the waste (cardboard and paper, beer cans, organic waste …).
The project has been conceived mainly to create good habits in young people between the ages of 18 and 34 , who are the sector of the population that recycle the least but also the most accustomed to using social networks.
“The participants say they feel that the garbage can is watching them, and that makes them think twice before throwing something away,” explains Anja Thieme, the person in charge of the project. In fact, in just two weeks, youth using BinCan dramatically increased the amount of trash recycled. “We have created a platform for self-reflection, a permanent reminder, a kind of awareness,” adds Thieme.
