Time flies

tiempoIf you continually feel thattime is slipping from his handsYou don’t need a longer day but a change in perception, according to a new study by researcher Michael DeDonno of Case Western Reserve University.

In the latest issue of the magazineJudgment and Decision Making, the American scientist details his recent experiments with volunteers that he divided into two groups. The first was asked to carry out a task that involved making decisions and was warned that the allotted time was insufficient. The second group had to solve the same task knowing that they had enough time to complete it successfully. The results showed thatparticipants who believed they had no time were much less effective and performed worse on their tasksthan the rest of his classmates.

DeDonno assures that the experiment reveals thenegative effects of time pressure on execution and decision making. To combat it, the researcher recommends having confidence in the time available to complete the tasks, and cget into work and not the clock. “It is incredible what we can do in a limited fraction of time,” he says. After all, as the French writer Elsa Triolet said a century ago, “the only function of time is to consume itself: it burns without leaving ashes.”

Michael DeDonno’s next goal is to launch similar tests to measurethe response of the doctorswhen they have a tlimited time to care for your patients, and check if this “pressure” makes them “prescribe inappropriate medicines or make mistakes in diagnoses.”
