Traffic light talk with Kevin Kühnert: The formerly wild Juso talks a lot, but says little

Kevin Kühnert is also a guest in Markus Lanz’s ZDF talk. But the moderator bites granite with the SPD politician.

Hamburg – In the first half of his ZDF talk, Markus Lanz asked the deputy SPD party chairman Kevin Kühnert about the status of the traffic light explorations. This is made more difficult for him by Kühnert’s genteel reluctance to make concrete statements. The long-time Juso boss insists that he has confidence in the exploratory team of his party and, according to his own statement, is not meticulously informed about the course of the talks.

The FAZ parliamentary correspondent Helene Bubrowski can understand such tactics with background information on the one hand, but classifies the non-statements of those involved in specially arranged press conferences as “inappropriate” to the seriousness of the situation. Even when Lanz, equipped with this communicative ammunition, followed up with Kühnert, he continued to be uninformed.

ZDF Talk: Markus Lanz bites Kevin Kühnert’s granite

The fact that the presenter Lanz, known for his investigative questioning technique, largely bites on granite in an interview with Kühnert, damages the flow of the program considerably: the first half is dominated by typical political speech without any gain in knowledge, which the formerly wild Juso Kühnert has now perfectly mastered.

The dramaturgical trick that Lanz wants to lure his guest out of the reserve with potentially controversial excerpts from the current NDR documentary series about Kühnert’s political work over the past three years is also largely rolling off. Kühnert obviously feels flattered when he is referred to by Lanz as the “cerebrum of the SPD”, but keeps behind the mountain with tangible statements. The bottom line is that the documentary excerpts, which are intended as templates for conversations, end up as internal advertising within the ÖRR.

Markus Lanz and Kevin Kühnert on ZDF Talk: Talked a lot, said little

After the tough traffic light talk with Kevin Kühnert, Lanz still wants to talk about how politicians manage to reinterpret “narratives” that were declared absurd yesterday as the correct solution. When Kühnert is asked to comment on the joy he filmed about the defeat of Olaf Scholz in the runoff election for the SPD executive committee, the strategist bridles the horse from behind and interprets the jubilation over the (now piquant) Scholz-Aus to the joy of the victory of Walter Borjans and Saskia Esken in the board race.

Bubrowski Kühnert pours water into the wine, but this does not detract from it. After all, Kühnert admits that he and the Jusos “sometimes treated unfairly” with Scholz. “Do you regret that?” Asks Lanz and gets a Larifari hint that old animosities are off the table. It remains to be seen whether the “alleged Chancellor” (Bubrowski) Scholz sees it that way too. The conclusion of the Lanz Talk with Kühnert can be that there was a lot of talk and little said – even if the approach was about basic questions of the political debate that would have been worth discussing.

The second part of Markus Lanz (ZDF) deals with Afghanistan

The second part of Markus Lanz’s ZDF program is about the politically and humanitarian precarious situation in Afghanistan and how Germany and Europe should respond specifically to the misery. The foreign policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group Bijan Djir-Sarai reminds that he has long been calling for an “exit strategy” for Afghanistan, which, however, has never been tackled.

He sees the war as “politically lost” and hopes that the mistakes and consequences of the operation will be determined by the future federal government. When asked about the SPD’s position on the acquisition of European drones for use in the war, which are intended to compensate for the United States’ withdrawal from the world political stage, Kevin Kühnert defends the duration of his party’s decision-making in a plea – a clear opinion remains.

ZDF talk Markus Lanz: Disastrous conditions in Afghanistan

As a man from the practice, the internist Tankred Stöbe, who is involved with “Doctors Without Borders”, reports on the disastrous health conditions in Afghanistan, which he witnessed on site in September. Stöbe is hoping for “quick answers” from politicians to alleviate the plight of the Afghan people. An honorable project that is complicated by the realpolitical dilemma. The FDP politician Bijan Djir-Sarai bluntly names it as a problem that the Taliban are the new rulers – and rejects their political recognition. Discussions should be focused purely on aid, whereby it is crucial what actually happens with the aid.

Stöbe also sees the use of funds as insufficiently controlled, but at the same time refers to the “urgency” of the situation and misses “immediate effects”. The journalist Helene Bubrowski analyzes that the will of the German government for a success in the Hindu Kush was too great to clearly identify failures. “Painful honesty will have to be on the table,” says Bubrowski, but he has doubts as to whether the new federal government will really take a critical look at it.

It is very likely that the required review will be up for debate in other Lanz broadcasts; and maybe the talk with the invited politicians will even go beyond platitudes. (Christian Horn)
