Luis Alfonso Gámez is a journalist. He has been the host of the series Skeptics (ETB) and has maintained the Magonia blog since June 2003, dedicated to the critical analysis of the so-called paranormal mysteries. He has written the books The danger of believing (2015), The hidden face of the mystery (2010) and Chronicles of Magonia (2012), in addition to having coordinated the collective work Mysteries in the light of science (2008), published by the University of the Basque Country.
He is fascinated by contemporary mythical beliefs, particularly the UFO phenomenon and everything around him. He works at the newspaper El Correo, where he has covered science information for years.
“The UFO phenomenon emerged in the late 1940s in a very rich breeding ground formed by science fiction, the belief that we are not alone and that, specifically, Martians exist, and the fear that there are other powers that they fly over the United States. It is a totally North American phenomenon, “the expert explained to us.
Why do so many people believe in UFOs without scientific evidence?
Humans are very credulous beings, we believe in gods, in spiritism … when the flying saucers arrive, everything fits together, because it has a technological component and also tells us that we are not alone. That being alone in the universe gives a bit of unease, believing that there is someone else there who can guide us gives us hope.
Will we be the first to visit another civilization or will they come to Earth?
The universe is so big that thinking that we can visit others, or that others come… at this moment, with what we know, is practically impossible. Our closest star is four light years away… it seems unthinkable. It would be more feasible to communicate, but that raises the problem of language: would we be able to understand beings that we do not know what they are like, what their senses are or on what planet they have grown up?
Along with Luis Alfonso Gámez’s talk at Homo Curiosus, the following documentary has been screened:
UFOs: Declassified
Hidden from the general public and heavily guarded, all over the world there are government facilities dedicated to the study of the UFO phenomenon. In them thousands of sightings are documented, such as those of the great black triangles that appeared during the 80s and 90s in the night skies around the world, and mythical events of ufology, such as the Roswell incident, in which there is no lack of a alien autopsy and recovery of the wreckage of a crashed alien ship. Now, many of these files have been declassified and the time has come to answer one of the great questions of our time: do UFOs really exist?
