Video: Science in the Big Bang: Experiments with Water

In this video, Miguel Ángel Sabadell reminds us of a chapter in the series The Big Bang Theory in which Sheldon learned to swim online to be prepared at that moment when sea levels rise rapidly as a result of the melting of the Arctic. .

Water has surprising properties, one of which is the tremendous capacity to accumulate energy, and this is why it costs so much to heat it . To check this, in the experiment shown in the video a candle is lit. We all know that when a balloon is brought close to a candle, it explodes. But what happens if we place a balloon filled with water on top of a candle? It does not explode.

This effect occurs because all the heat generated by the candle has passed from the balloon to the water, which is storing it. As a consequence, the balloon does not heat up and does not burst.

Second experiment: the ‘magic’ bottle

Continuing with the water, Miguel Ángel Sabadell challenges us with a full plastic bottle and assures us that he is going to puncture it, but that not a drop will come out. And it is that, for water to come out with the holes, the atmosphere would have to put pressure on the surface of the bottle. As this is covered, there is no such pressure on the water. What happens when the bottle is uncapped? As expected, it starts to drip.

Other properties of water

Water, that essential element for life, has many properties that make it so special. In this video we have met some, but we remind you of others that may sound familiar to you because you have studied them at school.

The water has no color, taste or smell. In addition, it is the only one that can be found naturally in its three states – solid, liquid and gaseous – on the face of the Earth. It freezes at 0 ° C and boils at 100 ° C. It also has a high surface tension, and this allows things so basic to life as moving through blood vessels or plant roots.

Furthermore, water is a universal solvent, and this is due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with other substances. As we have already mentioned, water has a great capacity to absorb heat. Another of its chemical properties is that it has a neutral pH, that is, 7, and is neither acidic nor basic.

Slaves and Disabled: Forced Medical Test Volunteers

The main problem to carry out medical research is to have willing volunteers for it. And if they come out for free, much better. This is the story of unethical behavior in medical research.
