What makes thatone song is catchier than another? What causes us to repeatedly sing certain verses of a song? Psychologists and music experts from several British and American universities have deciphered the enigma and found the keys to the most catchy songs in history.
As the study, led by musicologist Alisun Pawley and psychologist Daniel Mullensiefen, concludes, lhe catchiest song and, therefore, the one most likely to be sung at the same time as it is played by people is Queen’s We Are The Champions, a 1977 classic that has superseded another “anthem”:Y.M.C.A., of the Village People. On the top ten catchy songs list, Sum 41’s Fat Lip ranks third, followed byThe Final Countdown from Europe,Monster de The Automatic, Ruby by The Kaiser Chiefs,I’m Always Hereby Jimi Jamison, BrownEyed Girlthe Van Morrison,Teenage Dirtbag from Wheatus; and finally,Livin’ on a Prayerof Bon Jovi.
Expert analysis reveals that there are four key elements that make a song the catchiest and the most ‘humble’. In the first place, the air that the singer takes to sing the verses of the song, in such a way that the longer the time he holds the words, the easier it is for us to sing with him. Second, the greater the number of sounds and nuances that are brought into the chorus, the more catchy the song will be. Third, songs with high-pitched male voices and great vocal efforts would indicate higher doses of energy. Finally, the sex of the vocalist also influences. Accompanying the singer can be, according to the researchers,a kind of subconscious war cry, so singing with a man could awaken a tribal part of our primitive or tribal human being that is heading towards a battle.
