The brain is one of the most complex organs in the human body. It is part of the Central Nervous System (CNS), weighs just over a kilo and a half (representing just 2% of total body weight) and receives approximately 25% of the total blood that pumps the engine of our body, the heart.
The brain is protected by the skull and a clear liquid cerebrospinal fluid , which prevents both physical and immunological conditions. In this member resides the ability to dictate the orders that regulate the human body. We are talking both about movements, sensations and feelings.
On different occasions, this organ is wrongly classified as a muscle. However, it is not formed by muscle cells ( myocytes ), but by millions of neurons , which, interconnected by axons and dendrites , allow to regulate each and every one of the functions of the body and mind.
Its study dates back hundreds of years, but it has always been an organ that arouses the curiosity of scientists due to its enormous complexity. The brain, as we know it today, is the result of 2.5 million years of human evolution , from the first hominids to the current Homo Sapiens. In fact, it is considered that it began to increase remarkably in size from Australopithecus africanus.
Its structure and general anatomy is very similar between different mammals, but the differentiating component between humans and animals is the significantly higher brain volume of people.
Despite all the information that neurology has managed to gather in recent years (especially thanks to advances in technology), the human brain remains a mystery. To be healthy, strong and function properly, we must pamper and take care of it every day. Our habits , such as diet or exercise, significantly determine the evolution, development and health of the member.
The brain is not only a vital organ for us, but also an intricate, complex and fascinating element of which we still have much to discover. Do you want to know more about him? We reveal some of its curiosities in the following gallery.
