Allotments rediscovered in corona pandemic

Allotment gardens are becoming more popular again. The Federal Association of German Gardening Friends has been seeing an upward trend for years – and not just since the corona pandemic.

Berlin – Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, some people seem to be rediscovering the allotment garden for themselves.

"Even in locations that had parcels that were partially empty before the corona pandemic, there are now often waiting lists again," said the managing director of the Federal Association of German Gardening Friends (BDG) Stefan Grundei. He sees the cause of the increasing demand not only in the virus crisis. According to Grundis, Corona has strengthened a trend "towards allotment gardens" that has existed for years.

According to its own information, the BDG currently unites around 900,000 allotment gardens under its roof. Another 200,000 are organized at other institutions, as can be seen from a response by the federal government to a small request from several MPs and the Left in June. In 1990, however, there were still around 1.3 million allotment gardens. dpa
