For the second year in a row, debutants and guests have to do without the Vienna Opera Ball. The corona pandemic is again hailing the plans for the event, which is considered a social climax.
Vienna – The Vienna Opera Ball 2022 will not take place. The opera ball with its thousands of guests would be the wrong signal in the current Corona situation, said State Secretary for Art and Culture Andrea Mayer (Greens) on Wednesday of the Austrian news agency APA.
Instead of continuing to plan for the event, which is considered to be the social climax, the State Opera now has the opportunity to “put together a nice program for young and old” on the days that have become free due to the cancellation. The ball was supposed to take place on February 24th.
“Not the necessary conditions”
“We have done everything to ensure that the opera ball can still take place. But the whole situation at the moment just doesn’t offer the necessary conditions, ”said State Opera Director Bogdan Roscic. The ball now needs months of preparation, including from all partners and suppliers. “These deadlines could no longer be met.”
Around 5300 guests come to the Opera Ball, which is always sold out. In addition, around 2000 people work in front of and behind the scenes. The opera ball was canceled as early as 2021 due to the pandemic. dpa
