The eruption of the Etna volcano paralyzes the airport of the city of Catania in Sicily. A huge column of smoke rises above the mountain.
Catania – After an eruption of the Etna volcano on the Italian island of Sicily, the nearby airport of the city of Catania temporarily had to cease operations on Tuesday (14.12.2021). No machine could take off or land, said Catania-Fontanarossa Airport in the afternoon.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology had registered volcanic activity at the south-east crater on Etna since late morning. In photos of the institute a huge column of smoke could be seen rising from the more than 3300 meter high mountain.

Etna: volcano in Sicily erupts – airport closed
Etna had already spat lava on Tuesday night. The lava pulled through the snow-covered slope down to about 1,800 to 1,700 meters. There were initially no reports of injuries or major damage.
In the past, the airport in Catania south of the volcano had to temporarily block the airspace during eruptions, especially when the ash cloud was moving south as on Tuesday. (lrg / dpa)
