Sonya Kraus talks about her breast cancer diagnosis: “But these 20 minutes can save your life”

In an interview with Bunte magazine, the 48-year-old gives her first private and emotional insight since her first diagnosis in autumn 2021. When asked how the moderator is doing, she replies: “I’m fine”. She would have preferred to talk about a different topic – but “that’s the way it is”. She sees it as her mission and an affair of the heart. “In this pandemic, many women unfortunately dare to go to the doctor far too late. There are a thousand good reasons not to go for preventive care: no time, no desire, Corona, it won’t be anything, I don’t like my gynecologist. But these 20 minutes can save your life,” the 48-year-old continued in an interview. She then hinted that if she hadn’t gone for the routine check-up, “I might not be alive” – an honest, thought-provoking statement. “One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in the course of their lives, one in eight women will get breast cancer,” says the moderator.

Sonya Kraus talks about her cancer diagnosis: she had both breasts removed

Now the moderator revealed in an interview with stern that she had her breasts removed: “A total, bilateral mastectomy – even if the knot was small and the left breast was healthy. Breast-conserving surgery would also have been feasible, but I wanted to be as radical as possible. Anything else would have worried me too much.” When she found out about her diagnosis, she was standing in her friend’s and neighbor’s garden: “The professor called me. I felt strange, like the air pressure was dropping in a matter of milliseconds. Life stops short. The brain doesn’t get it at first. But then it “clicked” for me and I thought about who to call first”. She now took care of her appointments herself – but the moderator was never afraid. “No. I think I’m extremely resilient because my brother died when I was six and my father took his own life when I was eleven. That means that even as a small child, as a young person, I learned how to deal with strokes of fate, challenges and real problems,” she admitted in the interview. Sonya Kraus is currently back in front of the camera for the upcoming season of “Das Internat”.
