Corona numbers are increasing for the fifth day in a row – these are possible reasons
Update from March 7th, 6:15 p.m .: A trend reversal seems to be emerging in the development of corona infections in Germany. After a long decline, the nationwide seven-day incidence has now risen for the fifth day in a row. The development can be attributed to various possible reasons:
- Omicron subvariant BA.2: Since the beginning of the year, the proportion of the variant that is probably even more easily transmitted in the infection process has been increasing. It should already be prevalent in this country – according to the latest available figures from the RKI, it had already caused 38 percent of the cases in a sample in the week up to February 20th. Based, among other things, on the rate of spread of BA.2, modelers led by Kai Nagel from the TU Berlin announced around two weeks ago that they expected the number of infections to increase again from the end of February. Experts also considered a longer plateau possible. So far, the majority of the omicron wave in Germany has been attributed to sub-variant BA.1.
- Carnival: According to the Ministry of Health in North Rhine-Westphalia, the sharp increase in corona infections in Cologne suggests a connection with the carnival. However, that cannot be proven with certainty. After a downward trend in new infections had been observed in North Rhine-Westphalia since the beginning and middle of February, the number of cases has increased again since the end of last week. At present, this mainly affects the age group of 20 to 29 year olds. Compared to other major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, this development can be observed particularly in Cologne – but also in Düsseldorf.
- Relaxation: Due to the time that elapses between infection, onset of symptoms, test and case report to the Robert Koch Institute, the omission of some corona measures on Friday (March 4th) cannot yet be directly reflected in the numbers. In the catering and hotel industry, for example, the 3G rule now applies again. For example, people who have not been vaccinated and have a negative test can eat in a restaurant. The bioinformatician Lars Kaderali from the Federal Government’s Expert Council said recently on NDR that this group without protection against a severe course would be more involved again in the infection process due to the increasing number of contacts.
- However, there have already been various relaxations in individual federal states in the past few weeks. In Berlin, for example, people who were not vaccinated were able to shop in ordinary shops or visit museums again. In several federal states, certain contact restrictions for vaccinated and recovered people were dropped.
- Opening mood: How people behave in the face of easing, i.e. whether they take advantage of possible offers, is crucial for the modelers around Kai Nagel. If leisure activities were to remain at the pre-pandemic level, modeling would suggest a further increase in the number of infections, according to a recent report by the group. Next week it could be possible to estimate how mobility is developing, says Nagel.
Corona in Germany: Head of the crisis team falls ill
Update from March 7, 5:24 p.m .: The head of the Corona crisis team in the Federal Chancellery, Major General Carsten Breuer, has Corona and is in isolation at home. “In view of the situation, the work of the crisis team will continue unabated. Wherever possible, Major General Breuer takes part in all situations and meetings digitally,” his spokesman told the German Press Agency on Monday. The 57-year-old will be represented by his deputy, general practitioner Ralf Hoffmann.
Lauterbach worried about rising corona numbers
Update from March 7th, 5 p.m.: Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach has expressed concern about the increasing number of corona. It will continue to be noticeable that the omicron subtype BA.2 is even more contagious than the original omicron variant, said the SPD politician on Monday in Berlin. After a long decline, the nationwide seven-day incidence increased for the fifth day in a row (see update from March 7, 6:05 a.m.) .
Lauterbach was confident that the negotiations in the traffic light coalition on the future Corona requirements will be completed in good time and that an amended Infection Protection Act will be launched. “We have to remain able to act, and that’s how the law will turn out.” In the traffic light, the FDP in particular is urging that the agreed abolition of many corona restrictions on March 20th be as comprehensive as possible.

Corona incidence is increasing: New figures apparently show a bad effect in carnival strongholds
Update from March 6th, 8:20 p.m .: In the carnival regions there is a clear increase in the incidence: According to Spiegel Online , the incidence, especially in the group of 20-29 year olds, rose sharply. According to the North Rhine-Westphalia State Center for Health, it is 4336.6, a week ago it was 1387.1. Michael Hallek, director of the Cologne University Hospital, also sees the carnival effect: “You don’t have to be a scientist to understand this. The connection seems absolutely clear,” he told the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger .
Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) told the newspaper that this development shows how quickly the number of contacts rose. And he warned: “We still have 200 deaths a day. And we have many patients who will keep permanent damage forever. Unfortunately it’s not over yet. I warn against completely careless behavior. ”Lauterbach had recently warned of a “summer wave” of the corona virus *.

Corona in Germany: Apparently more depression, alcohol and drug abuse among young people
Update from March 6, 3:37 p.m .: Corona apparently leads to more depression in young people, who in turn are susceptible to alcohol and drug abuse. This is shown by an evaluation by the health insurance company DAK Bayern for the pandemic year 2020, which is available to the German Press Agency . The basis is data from almost 104,000 children and young people from Bavaria who are insured with the health insurance company.
According to this, 6.7 percent of all 10- to 17-year-olds diagnosed with depression were diagnosed with addiction at least once within a year. In contrast, addiction was only documented in 0.6 percent of the students without depression. The risk for children suffering from depression to be treated for substance abuse is almost 13 times higher. In addition, the connection between depression and addiction increased significantly by 21 percent compared to the previous year.
Elimination of corona restrictions: Germans are drawn back into the distance
Update from March 6, 2:44 p.m .: With the elimination of numerous corona restrictions, the world’s largest travel group Tui has recorded a strong booking intake, according to its Germany boss Stefan Baumert. “Our customers have some catching up to do,” said Baumert of the Funke media group . One is convinced that one can approach the level of 2019.
According to the Tui boss, there is strong demand for Spain, Greece and Turkey for the summer. Mallorca will come back as the most popular destination for Germans for air travel. He also expects a revival of classic long-haul destinations such as Thailand, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Indonesia. A big comeback is expected for the USA*.
Corona situation in Germany: FDP is pushing for the end of the corona measures
Update from March 6, 12:46 p.m .: Karl Lauterbach * (SPD) has warned of being too careless in the development of the corona and is still pushing for important protective instruments. The Federal Minister of Health received objection from the FDP, which insists on an extensive end to everyday restrictions. “When the danger situation eases, measures must also be scaled back,” said Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Sunday). “You can’t just preventively restrict millions of basic rights in the long run.” Every solution must take this into account.
FDP Vice Wolfgang Kubicki told the Funke newspapers that he was sure that Lauterbach’s ideas for further far-reaching measures beyond March 20 would not be realized. It cannot be explained to anyone why Germany is acting “as a wrong-way driver” in the fight against corona in Europe. “We will not support such a special path. We didn’t have an overload of the healthcare system and we won’t get any more because of Corona.”
Corona incidence continues to rise – Novavax is a slow seller
First report: Berlin – The Robert Koch Institute (RKI)* has recorded an increase in the nationwide seven-day incidence for the fourth day in a row. The RKI gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Sunday morning as 1231.1. The previous day the value was 1220.8. A week ago, the nationwide incidence was slightly higher at 1240.3.
As the RKI further reported, citing data from the health authorities, the number of new infections reported within 24 hours was 116,889. The day before there were 192,210 new infections. The total number of registered cases of infection in Germany since the beginning of the corona pandemic has increased to 15,790,989.
Corona in Germany: RKI reports 116,889 new infections
| Corona case numbers in Germany | Sunday March 6, 2022 |
|---|---|
| Corona incidence | 1231.1 |
| Corona new infections | 116,889 |
| Deaths related to Sars-CoV-2 | 51 |
| Total number of deaths related to Sars-CoV-2 | 124.102 |
Corona virus in Germany: Official statistics are only of limited significance
However, experts assume a high number of cases that are not recorded by the RKI. One reason is the limited capacity of health authorities, for example, so that contacts can only be traced to a limited extent. In addition, according to the ALM laboratory association, there are now a larger number of people whose infection is no longer confirmed by a PCR test*. These infections are therefore not included in the official statistics.
According to the RKI, 51 further deaths related to the corona virus were registered nationwide within 24 hours. A week ago there were 57 deaths. The total number of corona deaths recorded in Germany rose to 124,102. However, the actual total is likely to be much higher as many infections go undetected.
Corona virus in Germany: the number of those who have recovered rises to over twelve million
The number of corona-infected patients who came to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 6.35 on Friday. Among them are many people with a positive corona test who have another main illness. The value is not reported on weekends.
The RKI gave the number of recovered people on Sunday as 12,119,200. The number of people who died from or involved a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 124,102.
Vaccination campaign against coronavirus: no run on Novavax
According to the German Association of Cities, the Corona vaccination campaign has lost momentum. On the new Novavax vaccine * there is “still no run” in the vaccination centers, said Managing Director Helmut Dedy of the editorial network Germany ( RND ). Dedy warned against too large vaccination gaps in the population. This means that you risk many difficult courses again with the next corona wave.

Dedy is nonetheless confident that hesitant people could still be persuaded to get vaccinated. They want to get even more people to get a corona vaccination. The newly approved Novavax vaccine has the “potential to reach those people who are skeptical about previous corona vaccines”. Above all, it is important to reach those people who are urgently needed for supply and care in the health sector.
The Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) has been recommending the Novavax vaccine for adults since early February. The vaccine is protein-based and differs from other vaccines previously approved in the EU, which are either so-called mRNA or vector vaccines. *Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
