Sony presents the Xperia 1 II, its new flagship phone

The large technology manufacturers have not paralyzed their plans and roadmaps, despite the fact that the MWC in Barcelona has not been held due to the coronavirus. Some companies have also launched the products they had planned to announce at the fair and among them is the Japanese Sony .

The company has unveiled its new flagship smartphone , the Xperia 1 II . At first glance, what is striking about the phone is its elongated appearance, different from other brands. The device has an aspect ratio of 21: 9 that I had previously used in other mobiles in the house. It is supposed to take advantage of and better visualize all those multimedia content. The touchscreen has 6.5 inches and 4K resolution (1644 x 3840) on an HDR OLED panel.

For this better content consumption, a new function has also been added that allows a 90Hz effect on the screen and two stereo speakers on the front.

Another curious detail of the device is that it has a headphone slot . This would not have to attract attention if it were not for Sony would have dispensed with this feature in its models introduced in 2019, the Sony Xperia 1 and Sony Xperia 5, joining a trend that several manufacturers already followed.

Now, the Japanese has backed down and has returned to bet on the 3.5 mm jack. The reason is that many fans of the firm appreciate not only wireless headphones but also those that go with cable.

The smartphone is equipped with the latest Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 865 , as is typical of a high-end phone. It comes with 8 GB of RAM and an internal memory of 256 GB, ideal for storing all kinds of content without limitations or having to go around erasing the memory. To all this we must add a fingerprint sensor on one side, a USB-C port (charges 50% in just half an hour), 4,000 mAh battery and IP65 / IP68 protection to withstand water and dust. The terminal has measurements of 166 x 72 x 7.9 mm and a weight of 181 grams.

Welcoming Zeiss

The Sony Xperia 1 II camera deserves a section for itself. Sony has retained its traditional physical button for the camera , in an attempt to continue to maintain its hallmarks. What is new is that it has decided to have Zeiss to calibrate its optics with a ToF sensor.

The rear camera is three cameras in one . The main one has a 12 megapixel sensor and f / 1.7 aperture. It is accompanied by a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, f / 2.4 and 3X optical zoom and another 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens.

The main camera sensor comes with an autofocus that makes AF / AE calculations 60 times per second, obtaining bursts of 20 frames per second. It uses a technology that Sony had developed for its family of Alpha cameras.

In terms of video, the Xperia 1 II can record in 4K HDR resolution with up to 60fps. The front camera has an 8 megapixel sensor and f / 2.0.

Sony Xperia 1 II release date and price

Sony has not specified the exact date when the phone will begin shipping, although it is speculated that it could be sometime next spring. However, if we stick to what happened with the Sony Xperia 1, presented last year on a similar date, we would have to go until a few weeks later. This predecessor didn’t hit stores until June.

Sony has also not made it very clear what the price of its new flagship smartphone will be , but, according to the previous phone, it could be around 949 euros.
