A wheelchair turned into a controller for an Xbox

Playing Xbox can be quite a fun experience, but not everyone can enjoy the platform in the traditional way. In order to provide greater accessibility to the Microsoft console and provide wheelchair users with more leisure options , an adapter capable of transforming an electric wheelchair into an effective and curious controller has been designed for the Xbox.

The gadget in question has been dubbed the Freedom Wing and the design is based on the combination of a motherboard and an Adafruit Feather M4 that can translate the joystick input commands into commands that an accessible adapter from Microsoft, the Adaptative Controller, can. interpret.

The NGO that wants no one to be left without playing

The accessory has been designed by AbleGamers Charity, a non-profit organization focused on helping people with functional diversity to be able to enjoy video games and improve their quality of life through them.

Thus, the activity of this NGO is mainly focused on the creation of devices such as modified controllers and special assistive technology, with all kinds of forms of interaction, such as being able to play only with the eyes. Its objective is to unite people and even offer a playful activity that can be used for possible rehabilitation.

“Video games allow people with disabilities to experience situations that may be difficult or limited in the real world, provide social media opportunities to maintain mental and emotional health, and open the door for them to participate in one of the world’s greatest hobbies. world ” , they explain on their website.

AbleGamers is working with partner AT Makers to provide precise instructions so that anyone who wants to can build an adapter unit at home. It is estimated that its production cost would be between 30 and 35 dollars.

The interesting thing about the invention is that it offers a way to play Xbox titles with an interface well known to people who go in a wheelchair. In addition, it seems that the technology could be useful for use on other consoles and on the computer, apart from the Xbox.

To make it easier for people with reduced mobility to play their console, Microsoft launched the Xbox Adaptive Controller a few years ago , which is necessary to use with the Freedom Wing. Designed for people with limited mobility, this accessory allows you to create a totally personalized experience, as it incorporates large buttons and can be connected to external peripherals, such as joysticks, mounts or switches.

The price of this last gadget reaches 90 euros, VAT included.

In the following video you can see the Freedom Wing in full action and its creator telling exactly how it works. The user is enjoying a smooth racing game, specifically Rocket League by Psyonix.
