Doodles , those illustrations that combine art and learning with the Google symbol and that have become an indispensable and fun complement to our internet searches, have been in business for 20 years .
This concept emerged in 1998 , when the founders of the company, Serguei Brin and Larry Page, began to play with the shape of the corporate logo to confirm their attendance at a festival in Nevada.
This design was very simple and its initial objective was to inform the users of the search engine that the creators would be “OoO” (out of office; out of office, in English). To do this, they placed a kind of human figure behind the Google letters and from there, the idea and tradition of decorating and modifying the logo arose to commemorate any type of important event.
It was from the year 2000 when its use began to be frequented . Since then, more than 2,000 doodles have been designed for different highlights. In the beginning, they focused on festivities, but the truth is that little by little they have ended up representing all kinds of anniversaries.
Its demand has grown so much that the company itself has had to establish a specific position for the design of these animations, the so-called doodlers . Before this, the person in charge of bringing these drawings to life was the webmaster Dennis Hwang . The current team, on the other hand, is made up of a large group of engineers and illustrators.
When determining when a doodle is going to be established, another team made up of different Google employees meets, who exchange opinions and ideas to conclude the date and idea that they want to reflect. This decision is not unilateral, since Google users themselves can send proposals to the company for the design of the animations .
According to the entity itself, the objective of this selection process is to choose the most interesting events that reflect Google’s personality and its passion for innovation.
What is clear is that doodles are fun, surprising and all reflect a beautiful story to tell. We invite you, therefore, to review in this gallery the doodles on the most outstanding scientific events.
