Kombilesa Mí, a group of folkloric rap from Palenka, celebrates a decade of musical work

Kombilesa Mí, based on the musical heritage of San Basilio de Palenque, fuses the traditional sounds of the community with urban music. Celebrating ten years of artistic work, the group will offer a concert at the Teatro Colón, on May 28.

Kombilesa Mí, the San Basilio de Palenque group that fuses traditional and urban music, will celebrate its ten-year musical career with a concert at the Colón Theater. Afroneto, KRMP, Mc Pm and Mc Ukibe, the members of the group, decided to challenge the possibilities of the instruments created by their ancestors, the same ones that accompany them since they were little, to consolidate a commitment to musical work from their cultural roots, but with new sounds.

We suggest: ABBA: an ode to the frenzy we call life

His lyrics are an exploration of Spanish, Palenquero, African Bantu, Portuguese, French, English, and the Creole language. The group also stands out for the mix of instruments, such as the traditional drums with a drum bass drum, which they call traditional drums; by a team of two large bass drums and a metal drum made by themselves, as well as by the caller and the rest of the percussion baseline, which includes a happy drum that is common in the bullerengue; there is also the marímbula, which looks like a cross between a Jamaican rhythmic box and a large Peruvian cajon.

The folkloriko palenkero rap is a party of fast rhythms, fast verses and sung choirs, fused with cumbia and peals of son de negro, mápale and son palenquero. Kombilesa Mí’s work has been recognized with nominations for Best New Artist at the Tigo Fest Shock (2014) and at the Shock Awards (2016). In addition, in 2018 they made their first international tour, “Ri palengue pa to enú”, with which they were in Chicago, Washington, New York, Maryland and Austin.

Kombilesa Mí’s celebration concert for a decade of musical work is scheduled for May 28, at 7:30 p.m.
