The US space agency, NASA, has launched a new website where anyone can enjoy live images of our planet thanks to the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on board the Climate Observatory of the Climate Deep Space (DSCOVR).
According to the NASA statement, a dozen new full-color images will be available each day and each sequence will present the Earth as it rotates during the course of a day. The photos are taken from the illuminated side of the Earth . In addition, we can also search by date and continent within the same website.
The EPIC camera, a 4 megapixel CCD device and a telescope, enables scientists to examine and analyze daily variations within such specific variables as ozone, vegetation, aerosols, cloud height and reflectivity.
Its full color images (each image is 3 megabytes) are generated by combining several images in a single color that are separated to create an image of photographic quality equivalent to a 12 megapixel camera .
" The effective resolution of the DSCOVR EPIC camera is between 10 and 15 kilometers, " says Adam Szabo, DSCOVR project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
