Best Buy's exit from Mexico hits Hot Sale and reduces sales by 8%

E-commerce in Mexico grew 81% during 2020 and catapulted sales such as Hot Sale to become more relevant than in previous years. In its last edition, the event generated 18,557 million dollars in profits and had a growth of 15% than in 2020.

Although the growth was lower, it is relevant that companies and users have confidence in this sales format, since it translates into more and more Mexican Internet users consuming more and more products online.

One of the categories that recovered compared to last year was travel, since it increased its sales by almost 200%, in addition to the retail sales model called pure players, those users who only use the internet as a sales channel, increased their presence by a 24%.

“Among the main challenges that businesses faced to achieve their sales objectives during the eighth edition of Hot Sale, the current economic situation, the return of physical stores and the health context are positioned as the main 3”, indicates the Association Mexicana de Venta Online, organizer of the event.

“Our projections for this edition were reserved, last year was totally atypical for electronic commerce, and although the pandemic context took us to a new level in terms of e-commerce that drove purchases exponentially, the great questioning in that moment was whether it would be sustainable, not only in terms of sales but also in terms of logistics, customer service, payment methods and delivery options, coupled with the economic situation and global uncertainty “said, Eric Pérez- Grovas, president of the AMVO.

In a total comparison of the campaign, this edition registered a decrease in sales of 8%, and among the most relevant findings we found that despite having an increase of 40.5% in company participation and the return of one of the most important marketplaces important (Amazon), the impact of BestBuy’s exit in the local market was evident, which responds to one of the favorite categories of Mexicans such as Electronics. As well as the absence of one of the largest retailers, as was the case with Walmart.
