The Arab Parliament, linked to the Arab League, has condemned this Sunday as “interference”, ” provocative” and “arrogant” the resolution approved on June 10 by the European Parliament that made Morocco ugly for the use of migrants and for having put them in danger allowing its passage towards Ceuta .
The Arab parliamentarians meeting this Saturday in an extraordinary session in Cairo criticize the intervention of the European Parliament in a bilateral crisis between Spain and Morocco, “the arrogant and unacceptable approach of the European Parliament when dealing with issues related to Arab countries, adopting resolutions that are contrary to the demands of the desired strategic partnership between Arab and European countries ”, reports the Moroccan news agency MAP.
The European resolution “contained false accusations against Morocco on the issue of illegal immigration” , thus calling on the European Parliament to adopt “practical and responsible positions that strengthen cooperation and coordination between Arab and European countries.”
Furthermore, it calls on the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Mediterranean Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and all regional parliaments to follow their example by rejecting and condemning the resolution of the European Parliament, which “contradicts the internationally recognized norms of parliamentary diplomacy ».
For the Arab Parliament, the crisis between Morocco and Spain can only be resolved through diplomatic means and direct bilateral negotiations between the two countries.
In addition, the resolution of the Arab Parliament praises the “tireless efforts made by the Kingdom of Morocco in the fight against illegal immigration , which stem from a strong political will and direct directives from King Mohamed VI, a pioneer in solving migration problems in Africa”.
Specifically, it recalls the organization in Morocco in December 2018 of the international conference that led to the signing of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and the holding in Morocco of the meeting of the African Migration Observatory in December 2020.
Link with the colonial era
In addition, the resolution supports opening the question of the cities of Ceuta and Melilla and the “occupied Moroccan islands” that links to the colonial era.
The tension between Spain and Morocco reached its peak at the end of May with the massive arrival of migrants to the autonomous city of Ceuta, which set off alarms in Madrid and Brussels and had the response of the Community Executive who stressed that the border of Ceuta is a European border.
Since then, the diplomatic scuffle has continued to focus on the treatment given by Spain to the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, who triggered the dispute.
