Or have you ever been frustrated having to speak to an answering machine? A new computer system is able to detect whether your interlocutor is bored or fed up, so that it can tailor its response to the person’s mood.
To detect the emotional state of the user, scientists have considered a total of 60 different acoustic parameters that can be indicative of anger, boredom or doubt. In this way, information such as the tone of voice, the speed with which one speaks or the duration of the pauses in the conversation is used. In addition, thanks to a statistical method that uses data from previous conversations, the machine can “predict” how the interlocutor will act depending on the development of the conversation. For example, the user may get bored or angry if the system has not understood what you want to tell them, or if they have had to provide the same information several times.
The authors of this work, published in the Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, have developed their system based on two factors that determine the development of a dialogue between people: on the one hand, the intention of the interlocutors, that is, how they intend to continue with the conversation, and, on the other, the mood and emotions of the same. Once both emotion and intention have been detected, the machine could automatically adapt its responses, for example offering very detailed information to those who have doubts or, conversely, not doing so if the customer is bored. In this way the conversation will be much more similar to the one that would be had with a flesh and blood operator.
