AMLO rules out that Mexico abandons the T-MEC

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was confident this Thursday in resolving the recent trade disputes with the United States and ruled out an eventual exit of Mexico from the North American free trade agreement, TMEC.

The United States and Canada, which are also part of the TMEC, announced in July the request for talks under the agreement, pointing to the Mexican energy policies of discriminatory and of undermining international companies and cross-border supplies.

“I think it can be resolved because there is a will on our part and I also think on the part of the United States government,” the Mexican president said at a press conference. “The consultation should not have been requested, there was no reason, the United States government was not well informed,” he added.

On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard anticipated that the expectation of the Latin American nation was to reach an agreement and was emphatic that he would not intend to abandon the agreement.

Under TMEC rules, if a complaint such as those filed by the United States and Canada is not resolved within 75 days, a dispute panel may be asked to review the complaints.
