Andalusia resists: mortality in the community in 2020, 7 points lower than the Spanish average

Mortality in Andalusia shot up 10.9% during 2020, with a total of 78,160 deaths , which is almost seven points less than the national average, according to data published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) .

In Spain , the number of deaths increased by 17.7%, with almost half a million deaths during the fateful 2020. You have to go back eight decades, to the years after the Civil War, to find similar records.

The data of the INE have as a source of information the death bulletins of the Civil Registry and have been disseminated based on provisional data from the Statistics of the Natural Movement of the Population (NPM) .

The figures, it is obvious to emphasize it, are included in a Covid-19 pandemic that continues to cause deaths in the community day after day: there are already more than 10,000 deaths that the virus has left in Andalusia.

March and April, black months

By months, in the whole of the national territory, the increases in deaths in March and April stand out, of 56.8 and 78.2%, respectively, compared to the same months of the previous year, coinciding with the worst moment of the pandemic. The total number of deaths in the country last year was 492,930 people, the highest since 1941 , in the midst of the post-war period.

Similarly, the evolution of mortality from August, in the middle of the second wave, stands out : especially in October and November, when the number of deaths increased by 21 and 21.6%, respectively, compared to 2019.

Specifically, in January 2020 43,058 Spaniards died, 3.5% less, and in February 37,737, a decrease of 3.2%. However, the situation changed dramatically with the arrival of the pandemic. In March , 58,124 people died, 56.8% more, and in April 60,951, an increase of 78.2%.

Once the worst moments of the pandemic had passed, the number of deaths stabilized again relatively: May closed with 35,023 deaths (3.4% more), June with 30,698 (3.7% less) and July with 34,695 (3 , 4% more).

Since then, with the arrival of the second and third waves, the death toll has increased again notably: August ended with 35,946 deaths, 13.5% more, September with 34,532 (15.4% more), October with 39,639 (21% more), November with 42,198 (21.6% more) and December with 41,537 (13.1% more).

According to age and sex , the greatest increase compared to 2019 in relative terms is observed in the group between 75 and 79 years old, both in men (with an increase of 25%) and in women (+ 22.4%). The only age group in which mortality decreased compared to 2019 was those under 30 years of age.

According to INE data, 6,280 people over 100 years old (21.6% more) died, 35,859 between 95 and 99 years old (+ 22.3%), 86,999 between 90 and 94 (+ 21%), 107,202 from 85 to 89 (+ 19%), 73,924 from 80 to 84 (+ 16.2%), 52,303 from 75 to 79 (+ 24%), 38,752 from 70 to 74 (+ 15.6%), 27,502 from 65 to 69 (+ 15%), 21,930 from 60 to 64 (+ 13.6%), 15,823 from 55 to 59 (+ 9.3%), 10,366 from 50 to 54 (+ 4.7%), 6,038 from 45 to 49 (+ 4.2%), 3,559 from 40 to 44 (+ 10.8%), 1,945 from 35 to 39 (+ 4.5%), 1,213 from 30 to 34 (+ 11.6%) and 3,235 under 30 (-2.9%).

Meanwhile, it seems that the pandemic did not affect the little ones . The infant mortality rate increased one hundredth in 2020 and stood at 2.66 deaths per 1,000 live births, with figures similar to those of previous years, such as 2.65 in 2019, 2.69 in 2018 or 2.72 of 2017.

Rest of autonomous communities

The number of deaths increased in all the autonomous communities. The largest increases occurred in Comunidad de Madrid (41.2%, with 66,583 deaths), Castilla-La Mancha (32.3%, 25,761 deaths), Castilla y León (26.0%, 36,177 deaths) and Catalonia (23 , 5%, 79,685 deaths).

Andalusia registered 78,160 deaths (+ 10.9%), Aragon 16,680 (+ 22.5%), Asturias 14,550 (12.9%), Balearic Islands 8,562 (+ 7.1%), Canary Islands 16,416 (4.2%, the autonomy with less increase), Cantabria 6,459 (+ 7.4%), Valencian Community 48,600 (+ 10.4%), Extremadura 13,060 (+ 16%), Galicia 32,822 (+ 5%), Murcia 12,237 (+5.8 %), Navarra 6,663 (+ 19.7%), Basque Country 24,238 (+ 12.4%), La Rioja 3,699 (+ 17.5%), Ceuta 649 (+ 20.9%) and Melilla 601 (22, 4%).
