People under 60 who have already received a first dose of AstraZeneca remain in limbo about what will happen to the second, necessary to ensure their immunity pattern. Health has delayed the inoculation of that dose for another week, so that they would not begin to receive it until next May 31, according to the latest update of the Vaccination Strategy. On that day, 634,829 people should have already received their full regimen, following the recommendations of the European Medicines Agency stating that the second dose should be administered a maximum of twelve weeks after the first. The administration of AstraZeneca began in Spain on last February 9. It was aimed at essential workers under 55 years of age such as firefighters, state security forces and teachers, among others, also health workers who do not work on the front line and, later, the general population between 45 and 55 years of age. with those first doses they should have received the second already on May 4. But the vaccination of this compound has been a race of rectifications. On March 15, the Ministry agreed to suspend vaccination after several cases of thrombosis were known in European countries, including Spain. On the 22nd of that month, the Interterritorial Health Council decided to restart it and also extend the age limit to 65 years, but on April 7, in a new rectification, it was agreed that it would only be administered to people between 60 and 69 years old. , due to the fact that thrombotic events mainly affected younger vaccinates. All this chaos has caused thousands of people inoculated with the first dose to remain in limbo. On May 31, all those who had received the first one up to March 8 should have already been immunized, respecting that set period of 84 days. 634,829 people would thus be outside the maximum recommended time. Madrid’s decision The deputy minister of Public Health of the Community of Madrid Antonio Zapatero has urged the Ministry of Health to decide with “maximum urgency” on people who already have a first dose by AstraZeneca. Zapatero has advanced that “if this response does not arrive”, the second dose of that serum will be given “to people who received the first and so voluntarily wish.” In principle, Health will decide next week which vaccine will be given to children under 60 years vaccinated with AstraZeneca. At the moment, nothing is known. The document on the vaccination strategy explains that “temporarily the interval of administration of the second dose has been extended to 16 weeks in people under 60 years of age in order to have more information before deciding which vaccine to administer. ”The Ministry’s goal was to save time while exploring the possibility of mixing sera from different pharmaceutical companies. But the report notes that “results from mixed pattern studies are not yet available.” The Government, through the Carlos III Health Institute, is conducting this study in five Spanish hospitals with 600 people under 60 years of age, in order to analyze the safety and immunization capacity of the combined regimen. However, this Thursday a study by The University of Oxford concluded that alternating doses of different vaccines against Covid causes mild and moderate reactions more frequent than if it is completed with the same preparation.
