Balearic Outbreak: The Balearic Government confines another group of students from Catalonia to Mallorca

New forced confinement of tourism students in the Balearic Islands. The Ministry of Health of the Government of Francina Armengol has quarantined 21 young Catalans in a hotel in Alcudia. They have been confined for having shared a trip with another young man who has tested positive for coronavirus. The measure comes at the same time that a judge has overturned the confinement of about 300 young people in another hotel in Palma.

This entire group of students has been forcibly confined to the Covid Hotel in Palma because they are considered close contact with the young man who has tested positive. Several groups of students from Andalusia are confined in this same hotel.

As reported by the Ministry of Health and Consumption, at the moment, in Mallorca there are already 286 affected by the ‘mega-outbreak’ and 68 positive: 16 with symptomatic COVID admitted to hospital centers, 51 more asymptomatic in the Palma Bellver bridge hotel and one in the Alcudia hotel.

Of the 218 close contacts that have been identified and have not tested positive, 181 remain in the bridge hotel, 20 more in the Alcudia hotel, one quarantines on his own with a medical prescription and 16 who have not been located in the Balearic Islands.

The Ministry has recalled that students receive health and personal assistance at the hotel 24 hours a day in the control of an outbreak that already exceeds 25% positivity rate. The situation at the Covid Hotel is getting complicated at times with the arrival of this new group of students forcibly confined by the Government.

Police control

Local Police officers maintain a surveillance device in the vicinity of the establishment.

The operation has been constituted after the numerous complaints about the inconvenience caused to the neighborhood by the people confined the night before. Complaints were received about loud music, shouting and acts of vandalism such as throwing various objects onto the street.

In addition, security personnel at the establishment expressed concern that alcohol was being supplied to isolated youths from a nearby bar through buckets tied to sheets.

A police crew moved to the scene and required the young people to renounce their attitude and they obeyed the instructions of the agents.

A judge breaks down confinement

The Contentious-Administrative Court number 3 of Palma demolishes the forced confinement to which the Government of the socialist Francina Armengol has decided to subject more than two hundred students affected by a macro outbreak of coronavirus related to end-of-year trips to Mallorca after that the Prosecutor’s Office show its rejection of this decision. The court decision only protects the confinement of infected students who have tested positive for Covid.

According to the resolution, in the case of young people who have tested negative or have not undergone the test, the measure adopted by the Administration is not considered proportionate by limiting a fundamental right.

On the other hand, the judge requires the Balearic Government to inform the court every five days of the evolution in the situation of each of the people affected by the measure, in order to review their status and the need, where appropriate, of its maintenance.
