Ben Affleck sees himself as a feminist

The actor is committed to women’s rights. With the drama “The Last Duel” he presented a story in which a woman defends herself against the power of men.

[Venice -] The actor Ben Affleck likes to stand up for the rights of women. “I see myself as a feminist,” said the 49-year-old Oscar winner on Friday at the Venice Film Festival, where he presented the drama “The Last Duel”.

The work of the British Ridley Scott (“Alien”, “Blade Runner”) is based on real events. It tells of a rape in medieval France and how the victim, a young woman, fights for justice.

“It’s an incredible and powerful story,” said Affleck. It was one of the first recorded cases in history in which a woman resisted the power of men over women. In many cultures and countries, women have been viewed as “less worthy” for centuries. “We didn’t want to come across like preachers or with a raised index finger,” Affleck said. The actor also wrote the script, as did Matt Damon (50), who also played one of the leading roles.

In the film “The Last Duel”, Marguerite de Carrouges accuses squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) of raping her. Her husband – knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) – first goes to a count (Affleck) and then to King Charles VI, who has only one solution in case. The film runs out of competition at the Venice Festival; the premiere was on the program for Friday evening. [dpa]
