The Berlin crime scene “The Cold and the Dead” is a foretaste of a long winter.
Frankfurt am Main – This is a crime scene of the sad parent-child relationships, actually the sad parents. Some suppress, others are over- or under-worried. Since “Die Kalten und die Toten” (ARD) is an oppressive crime film, the consequences are sometimes catastrophic and sometimes deeply tragic.
There are, for example, the parents of the dead, played by Andreja Schneider and Rainer Reiners, good people who don’t know everything about their daughter, but above all they don’t want to know that she is dead. Isn’t a DNA test as imprecise as a corona test? (And doesn’t it stay strange how little the crime scene series has made of the Corona topic so far?) Markus Busch (book) and Torsten C. Fischer (director) sketch in short scenes, such as the awareness of having lost everything Days gradually creeps up into consciousness. It doesn’t take a lot of airtime to tell the tragedy of loved ones, it takes an idea. Here it is the small family celebration that the parents of the dead continue to prepare, the decoration, the table. Until they finally cancel it.

Another pair of parents shows that you can be all three at the same time: overconcerned about the child, undecorated on the world, a repressor on top of that, or a repressor. Like the policewoman Ziegler, Jule Böwe, who has reason to believe that her son, Vito Sack, is a murderer. The television audience will also add one and one at this point and come to a guess of this kind. Böwe plays a person in the tunnel, an uncomfortable, intense situation, especially since the son is obviously the greatest good-for-nothing on God’s wide earth. That may not sound very empathic, but empathy is an issue, but not the thrust. The thrust is a discomfort at each other and a horror at each other.

Rubin and Karow, Meret Becker and Mark Waschke move between the sad parents, more like axes in the forest, no, not like axes in the forest, which are perhaps much more trained psychologically than we think. So they walk around like people who only think of the word empathy when they can use it themselves (Ruby, when it has its moral character). In other words, you are one of the cold ones from the title. In some scenes there is snow, Berlin, an ice-cold city.

A small theoretical (unempathic) consolation: The logging does not help the investigation, on the contrary. The investigative work is partly to howl and the weak point of the script, which also documents the dreary, on the other hand, cheerful attempts at amusement by city dwellers. A real highlight: the scene in which the police questioned the dating acquaintances of the murdered: The very different people, men, one woman, speak kindly of her, smile refreshed as they tell. The woman bursts into tears when she learns what happened. One can get the idea that the only really friendly person in the film was killed at the beginning.

There is again an explicit Berlin crime scene sex scene, this time without the police. And there is a new interesting figure on the police station, the assistant Malik Aslan, played by Tan Caglar, a professional wheelchair basketball player and now also an actor. As you can read, he has recently been seen as a doctor in the series “In aller Freundes” (if you only see the repetitions at impossible broadcast times, you are not up to date at all). The “physically challenged colleague” (he about himself) not only does a good job at the desk, but also stimulates business with brisk formulations, and after all, he sings quite well.
