Blockades cost more than $ 1 trillion to the automotive industry in Colombia

Asopartes expressed concern about the temporary closure of automobile assembly plants in the country.

In the framework of the national strike, the blockades of the main ports and roads of the country have meant considerable losses for more than one sector in Colombia. Several companies, such as Aldor, Upfield and welfare plants, have temporarily suspended their operations due to the closures. These companies were also joined by vehicle assemblers in the country.

Last week, the Colombian Association of Auto Parts Manufacturers (ACOLFA) reported that three assemblers in Antioquia, Cundinamarca and Bogotá , respectively, temporarily suspended their activities due to blockades.

In fact, according to Asopartes, the situation has led to losses close to a trillion pesos in the entire automotive chain, after this sector had been reactivated at a good pace and had a growth of 6.9%.

“From the association of the automotive sector and its parts, we ratify the concern expressed since the previous week and today the deep sadness, at the new news of the need to temporarily cease the operations of automobile assemblers in Colombia, a situation that is not far from the that motorcycle assemblers live, due to the physical lack of supplies that have not been able to be transferred from the ports of our country, especially from the port of Buenaventura ”, said the executive president of Asopartes, Carlos Andrés Pineda.

According to the association, blockades in the country’s main ports in the Colombian Caribbean and Pacific prevent the receipt of the inputs and supplies necessary to carry out manufacturing and assemblies . In addition, it points out that the situation puts at risk hundreds of jobs generated by the more than 51,726 associates.

The port of Buenaventura (Valle del Cauca) is the most important in Colombia. It moves half of the export cargo of the entire country and is the main destination for ships coming from Asia. In 2020, its three terminals (Sociedad Portuaria de Buenaventura, TCBuen and Aguadulce) handled almost 19 million tons between imports and exports.
