Siqueiros is considered one of the three great exponents of Mexican muralism, along with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. For this reason, Casa Morton argued that “View of the bay of Puerto Marqués”, the piece that will be auctioned, is a “work with unique artistic value, which signifies a testimony to the work of one of the most important artists in Mexico.”
The work View of the Bay of Puerto Marqués , a “unique” painting by the Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, heads the Latin American Art Auction that will be held by the Morton House next Thursday. The auction house detailed that Siqueiros’s work, from 1956, is valued between 4.2 million pesos (about 210,000 dollars) and 6 million pesos (about 300,000 dollars). “Since 1946, the landscape genre began to be a recurring theme in Siqueiros’ production. His travels around the world, as well as the theme of the exile that he lived in the Sierra Chiapaneca (southeast of Mexico), and his subsequent flight to South America, influenced his work, “the auction house said in a statement.

Siqueiros is considered one of the three great exponents of Mexican muralism, along with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. For this reason, Casa Morton argued that this is a “work with singular artistic value, which signifies a testimony to the work of one of the most important artists in Mexico.” In contrast to its iconic murals, this is a work made of pyroxylin on canvas and masonite, measuring 55.3 centimeters wide by 75.5 centimeters long. The painting is an aerial landscape of the marina of Acapulco, the famous beach in southern Mexico. In this work, the artist “captured not only views that reflect geographical characteristics, but also the use of perspective, composition and texture,” explained the auction house.
Morton will also “launch important works” from the collection of the writer, filmmaker and intellectual Miguel Barbachano, who was born in Mérida (Yucatán) on May 12, 1930 and died on May 12, 2020. Barbachano is known for being a pioneer of LGBT literature in Mexico and independent cinema. He is also remembered for the documentary on the life of the Oscar-nominated bullfighter Luis Procuna. “The Barbachano Osorio collection is a reflection of Mexican plastic creation and Morton Subastas is pleased to present emblematic pieces of it. Works by authors such as Fernando García Ponce and Francisco Corzas stand out, as well as the early work of the artist Vicente Rojo ”. The auction will also include a selection of 10 sculptures made in silver that belong to the Object Art project of the firm TANE.
