Commentator icon with a devastating verdict on Jogi Löw

For Jogi Löw and the DFB team, the EM 2021 is already over. In the show by Markus Lanz, national coach Löw in particular comes off anything but good.

Football-related delay: The beautiful evening will almost turn into a beautiful night, but nonetheless it is a fine, small round at the late hour, predicts Markus Lanz. Of course, they first analyze the currently completed game between England and Denmark at the EM 2021 before they land on the ZDF with the problems of German football.

Marcel Reif, Swiss sports journalist and commentator, brings the introductory statement that he would have expected more from the Danes and that the English deservedly won. Tabea Kemme, former professional soccer player, describes the English people’s fascination with soccer as impressive, but also a little frightening. Ewald Lienen, former professional soccer player and soccer coach, kept his fingers crossed for the Danes and was a bit disappointed that England won with a penalty that wasn’t a penalty. There was no touch that justified one. Marcel Reif contradicts this: It wasn’t a completely wrong decision. Not every touch is a foul and this penalty was just on the limit.

Markus Lanz on ZDF – criticism of the English game at EM 2021

Ewald Lienen treats the English too, but … they always talk about fairness. And there Harry Kane lies on his nose with every little thing, looking at the referee and seeing whether he saw it. Marcel Reif also criticized: There were hardly any offensive scenes. The Danes tried to get extra time. It was almost like giving up trying to somehow muddle through to the end. The referee was no more up to the game than the Danes in their risk avoidance strategy, says Lucas Vogelsang, sports journalist and podcaster. Courage has always been rewarded in this tournament. And especially the Danes who bravely got out of their personal drama and fought hard. At first there was a feeling as if they were drawing strength from their drama, agrees Marcel Reif, but also as if this strength escapes in the end. Also in the line-up: They did not trust their offensive to win the game and strengthened the defensive.

Ewald Lienen mentioned that they already had problems against the Czechs and of course the opponents are getting stronger and stronger and the players are getting tired. With the help of his notes, you could fill an entire broadcast with observations, he jokes and, at Markus Lanz’s urging, shows his full-written notebook into the camera. One would have liked to have listened to his remarks even longer, despite the late hour and also between his teasing with Lucas Vogelsang, to whom he verbally showed the yellow card and at whose statements he gasped audibly more than once. Only when he says that the Bank of England is scary does Ewald Lienen smile: It scares him in the other sense too …

Marcel Reif can’t help but swipe at Markus Lanz (ZDF) against Jogi Löw

The match between Belgium and Italy is also mentioned, or also: the art of falling. Marcel Reif explains that it fulfills the cliché that they wear with pleasure: So it’s the Italians who play, because someone falls dramatically to the ground. Ewald Lienen agrees, he also noticed this in Belgium against Italy: This scene with Immobile, who feels a touch, falls, at the moment maybe also feels a pain, but the joy about the goal falling shortly after is so great that the pain is quickly forgotten. Maybe a little too fast … Ewald Lienen speaks in the words of his neighbor, who compared to handball and rugby, it is not okay to sneak out advantages in connection with being on your nose at every opportunity. If acting is a male domain, Markus Lanz immediately adds the next cliché. Tabea Kemme lists the different variations: it doesn’t work, doesn’t work at all and doesn’t work at all. It doesn’t exist in women’s football either. And as a player, she would be ashamed of something like that, she clearly states.

After all, Mancini managed to put together a team with characters, mentions Marcel Reif. The Italian national coach is the complete alternative to Jogi Löw, Lucas Vogelsang throws into the room. Ewald Lienen also agrees: In addition to a few experienced players, there are a lot of wild guys within a team who can run up and down. Who constantly bite the calf. The German team doesn’t even have one of them. Jogi Löw wanted to give the boys the opportunity to become leaders, explains Marcel Reif. That didn’t work, so he had to bring the old players back. If the right characters are not there for the positions, the system cannot work, explains Tabea Kemme. People must also be given the opportunity to grow into their positions: every player has their strengths. If you put them in positions where they don’t feel comfortable, where the strength fizzles out, then this strength is missing in the system, analyzes Marcel Reif.

Markus Lanz on ZDF: Clear criticism of the DFB

If there are already predictions as to how Hansi Flick will do it, Markus Lanz investigates. Tying everything to a national coach is also silly, replies Ewald Lienen. He can choose the basic order. But a national team is always part of the football culture of the respective country. In Germany, certain positions in the team were no longer filled in recent years. Where are the good German center forwards?

The training philosophy is no longer up-to-date, continues Tabea Kemme. She noticed that in the last few years and that’s why she went to England. Germany is skeptical of new things and is still used to success. A performance society: At the age of 14, many are put into the bubble in which there is only football. Here the young players are trained to death, Ewald Lienen takes over again. So perfectionistic that many of them lose their fun. Where should a characteristic and strong personality with leadership qualities for a team come from? Too early, the youngsters become big, overwhelmed and cannibalized. The English have a completely different appetite for football. The German players will be deprived of any independence, agrees Tabea Komme. How do you know what you are hungry for if you don’t even know if you are hungry?

Markus Lanz (ZDF): Germany is no longer a world-class nation

The offspring are pressed into the existing system in which they are supposed to function. Ewald Lienen does not presume to be able to judge everything that happens in the performance centers, but of course a trainer, like a teacher in school, has the task of imparting experience. In the past, the coaches only played football actively for many years, then coached a team on the side and only then did it go completely into the coaching area. Today a certificate is obtained without any previous experience. We still see ourselves as a world-class nation, but we are no longer, says Tabea Komme in the wound as well. Or the others are also world-class … Germany is currently a long way from the top of the world, says Marcel Reif, down to earth.

The focus on the team is completely lost, explains Lucas Vogelsang. At some point this word is just a slogan. A hashtag. A claim and not a team in the true sense of the word, because nobody knows what that actually means. Just sticking to marketing ideals. A certain atmosphere is brought into it like the gossip boards because you don’t know how to clap yourself anymore.

Ewald Lienen is in a rage with Markus Lanz (ZDF)

A copy, Ewald Lienen is indignant. Another national coach could have set up a completely different team. Berti Vogts was mopped off by the Bild newspaper because he was too uninteresting, but at least he thought about where the football should go. National coach is a full-time job and needs someone who is fully involved. Jogi Löw did that with zero point zero percent, says Ewald Lienen in motion.

Tabea Komme adds again: You won’t see Hansi Flick’s handwriting in the next few games either, but something should change for the future. Also socially and beyond the marketing strategies, for which only the ever higher ticket prices and advertising contracts count. And now the next shit is just around the corner, says Lucas Vogelsang indignantly. You go to Qatar with this team. Again Ewald Lienen sighs from the background, but this time approvingly: He hasn’t eaten Qatar either. You almost lose your appetite for football …

But in view of the late hour, Markus Lanz has to stop here with a final look at the European Championship final next Sunday: Tabea Komme wants to see goals and guesses 3: 1 for England. Ewald Lienen finds it difficult to be brief in his prognosis: It’s also about other things, he complains, like a fair game and generally he would have allowed the Spaniards to do it. Lucas Vogelsang quickly throws a 2-1 for Italy in between. Markus Lanz had already anticipated Marcel Reif’s outlook at the beginning: The English will not be world champions. Well, maybe we’ll discuss it again next week. (Tina Waldeck)
