Company develops power banks for e-cars – in a "trolley case" look

A mobile battery for e-cars should make charging possible from anywhere. The manufacturer “Zip Charge” wants to solve a big problem of e-mobility with it.

Stuttgart / London – E-mobility will dominate our roads in the future. Daimler AG * and Porsche AG * have been relying on this for a long time. In light of climate change and increased environmental awareness among consumers, the end of the internal combustion engine seems to be coming soon. The combustion engine shutdown by the end of 2030 has already been decided at Daimler AG * (BW24 * reported).

But the poor charging infrastructure in Germany still poses challenges for electric car drivers. Among other things, Porsche plans to build exclusive charging stations * at the Brenner Base Tunnel. The fear of not finding a charging station in time and getting stuck is still anchored in many people’s minds. A start-up from Great Britain could remedy this in the future: With a mobile battery for charging e-cars.

Invention of “Zip Charge”: Thanks to the Powerbank, electric cars can be charged anywhere

Small, compact and about the size of a hand luggage case – the British manufacturer “Zip-Charge” has developed the portable battery “Zip Charge Go”, which is supposed to solve the problem of e-mobility in the future, reports giga.de. With its castors and handle, the power bank is visually reminiscent of a suitcase. An obvious advantage of the battery: e-cars can be charged anywhere with the help of a charging cable, even if there is no column nearby. In principle, the Zip Charge is equivalent to a petrol can that can be “filled” from the domestic socket. A solution that could also help the city of Stuttgart *. Because in the state capital there are too few charging stations for all e-car drivers. Stuttgart therefore wants to take action against “wild charging” *.

However, the development of “Zip Charge” has one catch: it cannot be used to fully charge e-cars. The power bank from “Zip Charge” is only intended to bridge short distances or distances to the next charging station, according to giga.de. The range is also limited. Up to 32 kilometers and an output of four kilowatt hours, depending on the model, the power bank has so far been able to do. The charging process takes between 30 and 60 minutes and can be monitored using a smartphone app.

The portable charging station for e-cars has not yet been available to buy. However, the manufacturer has announced that it will launch it in the fourth quarter of 2022. In addition to the purchase, it should also be possible to rent the power bank and should start at 57 euros a month. “Zip Charge” has not yet provided any information on the purchase price itself.

E-mobility: Car manufacturers want to score points with buyers with a long range

However, charging stations will not be able to completely replace the power bank for e-cars. Other companies are also addressing the problem of the poorly developed charging network in Germany. A company from Graz, Austria has come up with a wireless charging method for e-cars *.

The car manufacturers, on the other hand, rely on more powerful batteries with longer ranges. The S-Class EQS from Mercedes-Benz * has a range of 770 kilometers. But the carmaker from Baden-Württemberg * may soon face competition from the USA. The company “Lucid Air” announced that its e-car would have a range of 837 kilometers *. That would even put the EQS from Daimler and the Tesla Model S Long Range in the shade with a mileage of 660 kilometers. * BW24 is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
