The Bavarian state government issued another corona update this Tuesday. All loosening was announced. All news in the ticker.

  • The loosening in the areas of youth work, culture and sport are now fixed. (See update, from 12.15 p.m.)
  • The Bavarian cabinet has now decided to end the Luca app. (See update of January 25, 12:30 p.m.)
  • This ticker is continuously updated.

Update from January 26, 6:50 a.m .: The Söder government in Bavaria announced relaxation of the current corona rules on Tuesday. Despite the increasing number of infections. Minister of State Herrmann said at a press conference that the hospitalization rate and the number of corona patients in the intensive care units were declining at the same time. According to the Robert Koch Institute, the seven-day incidence in Bavaria was 1068 on Wednesday and 940.6 nationwide.

At the top of the incidences in the Free State and in seventh place in Germany, right after various districts of the city of Berlin, is the district of Dachau. In the district neighboring the state capital, the incidence is 1997.2. It is followed at some distance by the state capital itself with an incidence of 1763.1 and the city of Rosenheim with 1545.8. The district of Coburg has the lowest incidence in Bavaria with 377.7 followed by the neighboring district of Kronach with 409.9.

A total of around 1,634,000 infections with the corona virus have been confirmed in Bavaria since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of people currently infected rose by almost 22,600 cases. Within the past 24 hours, 21 other people in Bavaria have died of or with the virus. The total number of deaths in Bavaria rose to 20,362.

Corona in Bavaria: Almost two thirds of the ventilation patients in the LMU clinic died

Meanwhile, it became known that the delta variant of the corona virus apparently also led to serious illnesses in children more often than the previous virus types. This is shown by patient numbers at the Hauner Children’s Hospital at the LMU Clinic in Munich. In November 2021, 14 children and adolescents were treated there – a high, as the clinic reported on the occasion of the first corona cases in Germany two years ago. So far, a total of 60 children with Covid infection have been treated in the Hauner Children’s Hospital, 15 of them in the intensive care unit, most of them with serious previous illnesses.

In the past two years, 570 corona patients have been treated in the intensive care units of the LMU Klinikum. On average they were 61.4 years old, 70 percent were men. The average length of stay in the intensive care unit was 16.7 days – for other illnesses the average is around 4 days. A corona patient was even in the intensive care unit for 160 days – he has now been released home. 94 patients were treated with the artificial lung, mostly the last option. 38 patients survived; 2 are still being dealt with.

Corona in Bavaria: Free State is definitely getting out of the Luca app

Update from January 25, 4:25 p.m .: The Ministry of Health and Digital has now also confirmed it: Bavaria is definitely getting out of the Luca app for tracing contacts in the corona pandemic *. This was already reported exclusively by the Munich Merkur in the morning (see update from 12.30 p.m.). The Free State will let the contract expire on April 5th. Instead, in the future, the fight against the corona pandemic will be based on anonymous contact tracing and the further development of the Corona warning app.

Other countries are already doing the same or have announced this. The two ministries cited the rapid spread of the omicron variant as the reason, which makes it much more difficult for the health authorities to track individual contacts. Contact data collection via the Luca app is therefore no longer indicated.

Corona in Bavaria: The license to use the Luca app expires in April

On April 6, 2021, Bavaria acquired a twelve-month license for the nationwide use of the Luca app. In the case of a confirmed Covid 19 infection, the health authorities could query the contact details of the infected person recorded with the app, for example in restaurants or cinemas, and notify other contact persons.

“On the basis of a precise benefit assessment, we decided not to extend the Luca app user contract after it expired,” said Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU). The Corona-Warn-App strengthens the personal responsibility of each individual, which is particularly important in the current Omicron wave with high infection rates.

Corona in Bavaria: Free State no longer relies on the Luca app

“Because it enables users to protect themselves effectively and to warn others immediately.” He asked Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD) to make the app fit for this new role and to provide more details on the contacts relevant to the infection to make available – i.e. more specific information on the place and time of the risk contacts.

Most recently, the area of application of the Luca app had already been significantly reduced – for example because the obligation to collect contact data in Bavaria was significantly reduced, including in restaurants. At the same time, the federal government’s Corona warning app has been continuously developed and covers more and more functionalities of the Luca app.

Digital Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU) explained: “The collection of contact details via app was an essential and at the time very useful building block in the fight against the pandemic.” In the current situation, other ways of defending against corona would now be necessary.

Corona in Bavaria: loosening fixed – this is now changing in the Free State

Update from January 25, 1:05 p.m .: As expected, the Bavarian state government has relaxed some areas. The winners of this easing are youth work, where 3G applies again, culture and sport. Here, the capacity limit for the spectators is the keyword of the day. In sports, the capacity will be increased to 25 percent – with a maximum capacity of ten thousand spectators. The culture can look forward to an increase to 50 percent occupancy, previously it was 25.

A big step is also the Luca app (see update 12.30 p.m.) . The operators of the app received almost 450,000 euros a month from the Bavarian state government, but it was not used as often as expected. So it’s not exactly surprising that the government has drawn the line on this.

Corona in Bavaria: Press conference of the Bavarian state government is over

Update from January 25, 1 p.m.: The press conference is over.

Update from January 25, 12:52 p.m .: A journalist asks how the PCR tests should be prioritized. Klaus Holetschek makes it clear again that the capacity of the tests will be increased from 360,000 per week to 486,000 beforehand. Nevertheless, prioritization cannot be ruled out. “It will most likely turn towards symptomatic people, caregivers,” he says. The details still have to be discussed.

Update from January 25, 12.40 p.m .: Why isn’t Markus Söder at the press conference today? Florian Herrmann explains this by saying that the Bavarian state government has not decided on any major changes.

Corona in Bavaria: Bavaria’s government has decided to end the Luca app

Update from January 25, 12:32 p.m .: Klaus Holetschek would like the general obligation to vaccinate to be launched now. “It’s important to discuss and decide this in the Bundestag now,” he says. “The general obligation to vaccinate is an act of solidarity.” It would also help ensure that the health system is not overloaded.

Update from January 25, 12:30 p.m .: Bavaria’s cabinet decides to stop working with the Luca app. This should be announced in the course of the day, the Münchner Merkur learned from circles in the Council of Ministers. The app makes it possible to check in digitally, for example in a tavern, without having to waste paper when leaving your contact details.

But the program was used too seldom for contact tracing – so seldom that the Greens spoke of a “money-burning machine”. The state government paid almost 450,000 euros a month for this. In the past few weeks, skepticism has also grown in the State Chancellery and the Digital Ministry as to whether these costs are offset by roughly comparable benefits. A final stroke was now decided in the cabinet on Tuesday morning.

Corona in Bavaria: Bavaria’s state government is increasing viewer capacities

Update from January 25, 12:25 p.m .: According to Minister of Education Michael Piazolo, the aim is to be able to keep the students in face-to-face classes. Some measures such as masks etc. should contribute to this.

Update from January 25, 12:20 p.m .: According to Herrmann, the capacity increases apply not only to art, culture and cinema but also to sporting events.

The three Söder ministers (from left) Michael Piazolo, Florian Herrmann and Klaus Holetschek have informed about the relaxation of the corona virus.

Herrmann can now call the easing fixed for major national events. So far there have only been ghost games like FC Bayern. “We will raise the viewer limit moderately and with a sense of proportion to 25 percent,” he said. “However, a maximum of only 10,000 spectators.” The government considers a moderate increase to be sensible, since it affects the economic substance of some smaller clubs.

Corona in Bavaria: Bavarian state government fixes easing

Update from January 25, 12:15 p.m .: According to Herrmann, there are no fundamental changes. In many areas, the previous measures remain – for example in retail or in gastronomy. However, there are the already announced simplifications from January 27th. One of the three areas is youth work. “We will increase capacity in the areas of art, culture and cinema,” explains Herrmann. The viewer limit will therefore be raised from 25 to 50 percent.

Update from January 25, 12:05 p.m .: Head of State Chancellery Florian Herrmann briefly outlines the current corona situation in Bavaria. It is currently coming to a head drastically – Omikron is still on the rise. The rest of the timetable reads: “Be careful with a sense of proportion. Drive on sight. Careful with prudence.”

Update from January 25, 12 noon: The press conference after the Corona consultations by the Bavarian State Ministry has begun. Head of State Chancellery Florian Herrmann, Minister of Education Michael Piazolo and Minister of Health Klaus Holetschek now want to report on the results.

Corona bang in Bavaria? Significant loosening possible – PK equals LIVE

Update from January 25, 11:49 a.m .: The press conference in Munich will begin in just under ten minutes. We start our live reporting as soon as the protagonists step onto the podium.

Update from January 25, 11:20 a.m .: Bavaria could be facing a turnaround in corona policy today. Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) has again announced relaxations for sport in Bavaria, despite the federal and state decision to stick to the previous Corona rules. “It’s not entirely fair that we have 2,000 people in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and that doesn’t work anywhere else. That we have 15,000 people in some football stadiums, we have ghost games. So if so, it has to be reasonable right away,” said the CSU boss on Monday evening in the ARD daily topics: “And that’s why we will make some adjustments there.” But Söder did not become more specific. Uniform rules would be better, he stressed.

His ministers, the head of the State Chancellery, Florian Herrmann, Minister of Education Michael Piazolo and Minister of Health Klaus Holetschek will announce this and other easing to the press in less than an hour (from 12 noon). We’ll be there live – you can find the results here or in the live stream.
