The corona numbers are rising sharply again in Germany. The RKI now gave an assessment of the increased death rate. The news ticker.
Update from November 4, 6 p.m.: The corona numbers are currently rising rapidly again in Germany (see first report). And the death rate is also at a relatively high level. According to the RKI, the number of deaths has increased again since calendar week 30 and has stagnated since week 37 with almost 370 deaths per week. However, this value is significantly higher than it was just over a year ago. In September and October 2020, the number of deaths in connection with Corona per week was mostly below 100 (72 in around calendar week 40). That is surprising – after all, almost 66 percent of the population are now fully vaccinated against the virus (as of October 26, 2021).
Compared to Focus.de , the RKI now gave an assessment of why the death rate in 2021 is higher than in the previous year despite the vaccination.
- The number of infections is currently significantly higher than at the same time in the previous year. The significantly looser corona rules are responsible for this. Bars and clubs were closed at the same time in 2020, and contact restrictions applied in many places.
- In addition, there is still a proportion of unvaccinated people in the population that is significant. Even among the more vulnerable groups over 60 years of age.
- Vaccination breakthroughs, on the other hand, currently do not play a relevant role in relation to the death rate, the RKI told Focus.de.
Update from November 4, 2021, 12.55 p.m.: Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn and medical associations want to advertise more booster vaccinations with a uniform line. Such a vaccination boost (“booster”) should therefore be offered to all vaccinated people who completed their vaccination series six months ago, as it was called after a video conference between Spahns and several associations on Thursday from participants. In particular, the elderly, medical staff and people with immunodeficiency should be “boosted”.
The campaign for booster vaccinations should be standardized and adapted, it said from the circles. Information on this is also planned for the practice doctors. Recently there had been discussions about how big the circle for vaccination reinforcements should be. The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) recommends them for the time being in a narrower context, including those aged 70 and over, which doctors’ representatives also referred to. Spahn advocates “boosters” on a broader front, which according to the vaccination ordinance are generally possible for everyone.
The six-month period is now initially reaching people who were vaccinated anyway according to the priority order that applied at the time, it was said to explain – purely in terms of the calendar, if you had received your full vaccination by the beginning of May. Accordingly, more than ten million people are currently eligible, including those vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson and people with immunodeficiency. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 2.36 million people have received a booster vaccination so far.
Update from November 4, 2021, 12.40 p.m.: In Germany there were almost five percent more deaths last year due to the corona pandemic. A total of 985,572 people died, 4.9 percent more than in the previous year, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Thursday. Four percent of all deaths were directly due to Covid-19 – in 39,758 people, this was the main cause of death. It does not include those cases in which Corona was documented on the death certificate as a concomitant disease.
New infections in Germany higher than ever – Merkel confidante sounds the alarm: “Boost urgently”
Update from November 4, 2021, 11.30 a.m.: The corona values continue to rise in Germany (see original report), but in comparison, the willingness to vaccinate no longer increases significantly despite an increasingly stronger fourth wave. Chancellery Minister Helge Braun explains in an interview with Bild : “To be fully vaccinated means that you have very good protection against getting seriously ill from Corona or even dying from it. But if the full vaccination – usually two vaccinations – was more than six months ago, we see more and more vaccination breakthroughs, especially among older people. “
As Braun further reports in the interview, the booster vaccination is not just an option, but urgently necessary. Older people in particular should act now, as they often received their second vaccination more than six months ago. “What irritates me to be honest: At the conference of health ministers between the federal and state governments in August, we agreed that this third vaccination was necessary. And only now, when the numbers are rising again, do everyone notice the urgency behind them, ”continues Braun.
Update from November 4, 2021, 9:50 a.m.: A 55-year-old woman was without a mouth and nose protection in Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday, during a check by the police, the officers then came across an arrest warrant against the woman. The 55-year-old was arrested immediately. As the police announced on Thursday, the woman had already been noticed in the past for violating the Infection Protection Act.
In addition, there was an enforcement arrest warrant for theft against them. In July of this year, she was fined 800 euros. For this, the 55-year-old now has to serve a substitute imprisonment of 100 days. Because marijuana was found during their search, they are also investigating a violation of the Narcotics Act.
RKI reports new corona record: the number of new infections in Germany is higher than ever
Original notification from November 4, 2021: Berlin – The Corona * situation in Germany is still tense. The number of new infections reported daily reached a new high on Thursday morning (November 4th). The health authorities reported 33,949 new corona cases to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) * within one day. That is 172 more than on December 18, 2020. A week ago (October 28) the value was still 28,037 infections.
Corona in Germany: RKI reports new record for new infections
The nationwide seven-day incidence * was 154.5 on Thursday, according to the RKI. The previous day the value was 146.6, a week ago it was 130.2. It was initially unclear to what extent the All Saints holiday on Monday (November 1) played a role in the development of the numbers in five federal states.
At the previous high on December 18, 2020, 33,777 corona cases * were reported within 24 hours. However, this included around 3500 late registrations from Baden-Württemberg from the previous day. The record level in the third wave of infections was 29,518 new infections on April 22, 2021.

Corona in Germany: The incidence of hospitalization is also increasing
The number of Corona * patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the Corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Wednesday as 3.62 (Tuesday: 3.29). With the indicator, however, it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay.
A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas last year.
In Bavaria, the corona rules have already been tightened due to the tense situation. However, the measures are different in the individual federal states. Virologist Hendrik Streeck * now cleared up a misunderstanding. (ph / dpa) * Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
