Corona numbers in Germany continue to fall – but the incidence is skyrocketing in Spain
Update from July 1, 12.30 p.m.: The number of infections and the incidence are falling, but the proportion of the delta variant continues to rise in Germany. Nevertheless, many citizens take their summer vacation after long-term restrictions. However, it is not uncommon for the corona virus to cause restrictions even on vacation, with dozens of students having to go into forced quarantine on Mallorca.
Most of the 181 Spanish students who tested negative for the coronavirus were out on Thursday
However, forced quarantine on Mallorca has now set out for their home regions. The day before, a court had declared the schooling of the students in the specially rented Corona Hotel “Palma Bellver” ordered by the regional government illegal and ordered the release of the sometimes underage students. The authorities had justified the compulsory quarantine for the participants of high school trips with the close contacts of the students at parties to those who tested positive. Another 51 students who tested positive had to remain in quarantine.
In total, after school trips from various graduating classes to the Mediterranean island, there were around 1700 in all of Spain
Corona cases reported. All infected people – most of them had left the island before the mass infection became known – and around 5,000 contact persons are also in quarantine at their hometowns. Initially nothing was known of any holidaymakers from Germany who might be affected. Many of the young people protested against the ten-day quarantine on social media and with banners on the balconies of their hotel rooms. You spoke of “kidnapping”. Two students even left the “Palma Bellver” on Tuesday evening without permission.
The corona numbers are rising again after a long time in Spain, which has a population of 47 million. The 7-day incidence is already a good 67 again, 59 in the Balearic Islands, 64 in the Canaries and even 121 in Catalonia with the tourist metropolis of Barcelona. The spread of the more contagious Delta variant of the virus is also causing concern.
Update from July 1, 11:10 a.m .: At least every second corona infection in the current week is likely to be due to the more contagious Delta variant *, according to an estimate by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). It is to be expected that the mutant discovered in India currently “accounts for at least half of all new infections,” writes the RKI in a report on Wednesday evening. Delta’s share of a sample from June 14th to 20th is estimated at around 37 percent. That is more than twice as much as the week before, when it was 17 percent.

Almost only long-term patients in Covid intensive care units
Almost only long-term patients are treated in the Covid intensive care units of the German clinics. “The vast majority of the around 600 Covid patients in the intensive care units are long-term patients. In individual cases there are also new admissions, but many have already been in intensive care for months, ”said Gernot Marx, President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) of the Funke media group.
Most of them were patients who were infected in the third wave in the spring, said Marx. “We now know that ten percent of Covid intensive care patients stay in the clinics for more than two months,” he said. “Ventilated Covid patients stay in the intensive care unit for an average of 14 days, ten percent require more than 35 days of ventilation therapy.” It must be assumed that every second ventilated patient will die.
There are currently 607 corona patients in intensive care units in Germany. According to the data in the DIVI intensive care register, 425 of them have to be artificially ventilated. The number of patients is back at the level of October 2020 for the first time. 1,710 intensive care beds are currently available for Covid-19 patients.
