Curiosities about the constellation Sagittarius

Sagittarius (the archer) is the largest constellation in the southern hemisphere and the fifteenth largest constellation overall. The constellation has many bright stars and is quite visible to the naked eye. Also, like the rest of the zodiac constellations, Sagittarius was recorded in the second century by the astronomer Ptolemy, which is Latin for archer.

Sagittarius location

Sagittarius is at the center of the Milky Way, and the galaxy is at its densest as it passes through Sagittarius. Furthermore, this constellation borders Capricorn and Scorpio as well as Aquila, Scutum, Serpens Cauda and Corona Australis among many other constellations.

Similarly, NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope captured the brightest stars in the constellation Sagittarius several years ago.

Curiosities of the constellation

In the constellation Sagittarius is Pistola, one of the most luminous hypergiant and hypermassive stars in the Milky Way. Although it is very bright, it is not visible to the naked eye due to the large amount of interstellar dust that surrounds it. Other stars that also form a very bright cluster are X Sagittarii and W Sagittarii.

In addition, although the main characteristic of this constellation is that it is shaped like a centaur with a bow in hand, some people also represent it with a teapot.

Myth of Sagittarius

In astrology, Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac and represents those born between November 22 and December 21. The Greeks represent Sagittarius as a centaur. That is to say, half man and half horse. Also, according to Greek mythology Sagittarius the Archer shoots Scorpio, who had been sent to kill Orion the Hunter.

On the other hand, the Babylonians associate Sagittarius with the god Pabilsaĝ, who had two heads, wings and was sometimes referred to as ‘the wild bull with multi-colored legs’.
