A monarch with artistic abilities: Queen Margrethe of Denmark is responsible for the costumes and set design for Bille August’s new film.
Copenhagen – The Danish Queen Margrethe II (81) lives out her love of design with films. The monarch is responsible for the set and costumes for the new Netflix flick “Ehrengard”, which is based on a book by the Danish author Karen Blixen, as the streaming service announced.
The queen has been engaged in various artistic forms of expression such as painting, watercolors, book illustrations and embroidery for decades. Because of her many years of experience as a set designer in Danish film, television and theater, she was made an honorary member of the Association of Danish Set Designers.
“I tried to interpret Blixen’s fantastic universe in the creation of the collages and costumes and I’m looking forward to seeing Ehrengard’s story come to life in this film,” the company quoted the Queen as saying. Director Bille August (“Pelle the Conqueror”) praised: “The Queen created the most fantastic collages for this occasion, which will dominate the overall scenographic expression of the film.”
“Ehrengard” is one of the last works by Blixen (1885-1962, “Out of Africa”), who is known in Germany as Tania Blixen and published internationally under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, and appeared only after the author’s death. “The stories of Karen Blixen have always fascinated me with their aesthetic narratives, their imagination and their picture-creating worlds – and I am very happy to be part of this project,” said Queen Margrethe. dpa
