Dennis Aogo at Markus Lanz's "emotional roller coaster"

Footballer Dennis Aogo speaks to Markus Lanz on ZDF about Jens Lehmann, Boris Palmer and the Cancel Culture. The corona pandemic was also an issue again.

Frankfurt / Hamburg – After Markus Lanz started aggressively into his talk week on ZDF on Tuesday, he already seemed quieter on Wednesday, only to have an unusually cautious conversation yesterday evening, during which he was almost unable to speak. Instead, the group with the lawyer and author Ferdinand von Schirach, the CDU politician Diana Kinnert, the former professional soccer player Dennis Aogo and the doctor Eva Hummers caught the eye with their clever and objective analysis of several complex topics.

Dennis Aogo on statements by Lehmann and Palmer – “roller coaster of emotions”

Dennis Aogo reported at the beginning of the “rollercoaster of emotions” that he has been moving through for a week. Everything was triggered by his publication of Jens Lehmann’s Whatsapp message, in which the former national goalkeeper Aogo had described as “quota blacks”. He declared without false indignation that he was struck by the assumption that he had not earned his success, but had come because of the color of his skin.

Aogo then spread his message in order to initiate a discussion, which was followed by a personal discussion with Lehmann. In the course of the public debate, however, Aogo himself came under criticism for having used the term “train to the point of gassing” in his moderation on Sky on the same day.

Ferdinand von Schirach at Markus Lanz about Boris Palmer: “Boris Palmer is not a footballer”

Ferdinand von Schirach confessed with a smile: “I don’t understand anything about football”, but showed Lehmann’s analytical acumen in his remarks on the “stupid news” and Aogo’s remarks. It definitely plays a role in the assessment who says something and for what reason. The lawyer judged the statements of the Mayor of Tübingen Boris Palmer, who had entered the public discussion by quoting a racist accusation, more strictly than those of the two ex-professionals: “Boris Palmer is not a footballer.” That is not just a politician, but Footballers also fulfill an important social function – especially as role models for younger people – was unfortunately neglected.

Markus Lanz: CDU politician positions herself against the conservative horror image of “Cancel Culture”

Fortunately, the language bans that were often criticized in the public discussion were not mentioned that evening. How difficult it is for us to talk about such statements at the moment, however, was shown by the fact that Lanz visibly struggled for words when describing Boris Palmer’s message. The CDU politician Kinnert, of all people, also positioned herself against the conservative horror of the omnipresent “cancel culture” and advocated the term “call-out culture”, which is not about destroying careers, but openly closing misconduct to discuss.

Schirach described Aogo’s temporary withdrawal from his role as a moderator as being in the “penalty box”, which was appropriate for the situation. Schirach’s classification of the party exclusion proceedings against Boris Palmer as a clever political move that had no serious consequences for Palmer, but spared the Greens from public discussion in the election campaign with reference to the responsible bodies was also illuminating.
