Empirical evidence could be defined as that information that we acquire through observation or experimentation. In this way, scientists analyze the data and record it. Furthermore, the process is a fundamental part of the scientific method.
Empirical research
The scientific method usually begins with the formulation of questions or hypotheses, to later acquire knowledge through observations or experiments. In this way, a specific theory is supported or refuted. Thus, it could be said that empirical research is the process of finding empirical evidence, while empirical data is the information that comes from research.
In addition, before collecting empirical data, scientists must design research methods to ensure the accuracy of the data. If there are flaws in the way the data was collected, the investigation will not be considered valid.
Different types of research
Currently, there are two different research methods used to collect empirical data and measurements. The qualitative method and the quantitative method. Qualitative research, frequently used in the social sciences, examines the reasons behind human behavior. That is, they are data that can be found using the human senses.
Instead, quantitative research uses methods to collect numerical data and analyze it later through statistical methods. Quantitative numerical data can be any data that uses measurement measures, including mass, volume, or size. In addition, this type of investigation is often used at the end of an experiment to contrast previous research.
Empirical, logical and anecdotal evidence
It is important not to confuse empirical evidence with logic or anecdotal. They are different pieces of evidence that can be used to approve or refute a claim or idea.
Thus, logical evidence is used to approve or disprove an idea using logic. Also, you can use deductive reasoning to reach a conclusion that provides logical evidence. Instead, anecdotal evidence occurs when a person recounts a personal story or fact that, whether or not it is true, cannot be proven or disproved.
