With greater or lesser agreement, we all grant that there is a literary canon that includes the eternal works, which must be read. But what are Don Quixote, Hamlet or the Ulysses of video games, often considered an art of our time? Who chooses the titles that marked an era over any discussion?
Well, the closest thing to an Olympus for gamers is the Video Game Hall of Fame , an initiative created last February by The Strong museum in Rochester (New York). And he has just announced the first six immortals of digital entertainment: Pong (1972), the pioneer tennis pastime with sticks; Doom (1993), which took advantage of 3D with levels of violence not seen until then; Super Mario Bros. (1985), the adventures of the mustachioed plumber; Pac-Man (1980), known in Spain as Comecocos; Tetris (1984), an additive import from Russia; and World of Warcraft (2004), the most important massively multiplayer online video game (MMORPG).
These are, according to a panel of experts and journalists, the titles that deserve to be in this new Hall of Fame, although there were other finalists who have remained at the doors: Fifa, Angry Birds, The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, Pokemon, Sonic, the Space Invaders … Do you miss any more? In June 2016 there will be new additions.
