Esquivel sees "unnecessary uncertainty" in debate of new governor of Banxico

For the deputy governor of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), Gerardo Esquivel, advancing the discussion around the successor of Alejandro Díaz de León in the governorship of the central bank only generates “unnecessary uncertainty”.

“I consider it unfortunate that we are discussing the issue of the change of governor with such anticipation. It seems to me that it adds unnecessary uncertainty to the economic and financial stability of the country. Personally, it seems to me that it is unnecessary, ”said Esquivel, who ruled out participating in the” process “and running for office at this time for personal reasons.

He added that the central bank is very solid “and a change of a member of the Governing Board does not affect the autonomy or compliance with the institution’s mandate.”

Gerardo Esquivel was once again ruled out as one of the candidates to be the next Governor of Banco de México. “For family and personal reasons I am not interested in that process” despite Cruz Azul being champion, he said.

As a Cruz Azul fan, in addition to being used to adversity, Gerardo Esquivel sees in him three characteristics that fans of that team have: permanent optimism, institutional loyalty and patience. “I’m not going to change teams,” he said.

On the end of his term as Governor of the central bank, Alejandro Díaz de León assured that it is an institution that serves all of Mexico and “will continue to do so.”

He highlighted that the election of the governor and of the members of the Governing Board of Banco de México is given by designation of the President of the Republic with the approval of the Chamber of Senators or the Permanent Commission.

“I am more than convinced that compliance with the Constitution and the Bank (of Mexico) Law strengthens the institution and the fulfillment of its mandate,” he said while ensuring that the current members of the Governing Board are committed to the fulfillment of the mandate and obligations of the bank.
