There are always small eruptions of the volcano – the people of Sicily are used to them. This time, ashes from Etna landed at the airport.
Catania – Due to a renewed eruption of the Etna volcano on the Italian island of Sicily, flight operations at the airport in the city of Catania south of the mountain have been stopped.
The runway was polluted with volcanic ash and therefore closed, said Catania Airport on Wednesday morning. Initially, no flights could leave or arrive at the airport until the morning. Numerous connections were shown as delayed on the flight plan.
Etna has erupted repeatedly over the past few weeks. Reports of major damage or injuries are very rare. The residents on site are occasionally affected by the raining ash. The rumbling and thundering of the outbreaks sometimes makes windows and doors tremble.
According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Etna has spewed lava and ash from the crater on the southeast side in the past few days. The experts recorded occasional eruptions on the northeast side. The ash clouds of the more than 3300 meter high mountain rose, according to the report, measured at sea level between five and ten kilometers high into the sky. dpa
