Forest fire in Tyrol: Fire near Neuschwanstein Castle under control

At around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, the police in Austria received a message that a column of smoke could be seen in the area of the “bell chime” in the municipality of Pinswang. The officials then found that there was a fire in the forest. Because of the drought and the wind, the numerous sources of fire would have spread rapidly.

On Sunday morning (March 13, 2022), the fire brigades managed to get the fire under control not far from Neuschwanstein Castle on the Austrian side, according to reports at Bayern24. As of now, no one was injured.

Fire in the Tyrolean forest: flames spread to the Füssen border tunnel

According to information from the Allgäuer Zeitung, the fire site could only be reached by land via a forest path from Hohenschwangau. As the mayor of Füssen, Maximilian Eichstetter, reports, the fire was initially “not that dramatic”, according to Bayern24. However, the fire then spread quickly to the Füssen border tunnel.

Due to the severe drought, a spark is enough to cause an inferno to break out. In Germany, there is currently the highest risk of forest fires in many regions. The extinguishing work will continue for the next few days to extinguish the last fires.

As a result of climate change, wildfires around the world are becoming more frequent*, larger and more intense. (Helena Gries) *fr.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
