Football for all: Sky launches an "economic" package with all Qatar 2022 matches

Luis Malvido, Sky’s Chief Executive Officer, acknowledges that sports content is fragmented due to the entry of new players – mainly in the streaming segment – who have obtained the rights to broadcast some of the main sports leagues.

“Now we all have a streaming platform contracted… One begins to add values and having all the entertainment comes to (generate) very high costs. This makes it very difficult for a family to access all of this,” says the manager, who has been in charge of the Sky division for 10 months.

Currently Fox Sports in its Premium package, Star+, Paramount, HBO Max and Vix, have sports content in their portfolio that includes leagues such as Formula 1, Liga MX, Liga MX Femenil, Champions League, Champions League, baseball and basketball leagues. , among others.

Contracting all the previous platforms supposes an expense that amounts to 676 pesos, and if the internet is added, the amount reaches 1,025 pesos. This if a basic connectivity package of 349 pesos is taken into account.

How does Sky’s ‘recharge scheme’ work?

The pay television company seeks to expand access to content, especially sports, with the launch of a 249-peso package that will include the 64 matches of the Qatar World Cup in 4K, as well as some soccer leagues.

This scheme works similar to a prepaid phone plan: every month the user goes to a self-service or convenience store and pays 249 pesos to have access to the service for 30 days, or 139 pesos for 14 days. The contract obliges the client to make 12 recharges and the main benefit is that if none is made within a maximum period of 60 days, the reconnection is not charged.

One of the benefits of this scheme is that users will only pay for what they want to watch, similar to mobile phone recharges, which have become an alternative to reduce costs in times of inflation.

Malvido assured that with this rate they want to retain sports content consumers who are looking for affordable rates.

Sky subscribers will also be able to access World Cup matches broadcast via its Blue To Go video platform at no cost and without the need for data downloads.

alliance season

Juan Carlos Muñoz, Sky’s chief content and programming officier, assures that the great entertainment offer is causing users to no longer be loyal to a company and begin to migrate to a new platform every month.

The manager sees that alliances between cable companies, fixed operators and streaming platforms are an alternative to remain competitive in the entertainment market. “Going around the world alone is not going to work because the cost of operating and generating content to keep users captive is brutal,” says Muñoz.

The manager estimates that 90% of streaming platforms already have an alliance with a cable company or satellite transmission company, such as Sky.
