The German Police reported this Sunday that it has prevented a group of about 50 ultra-rightists from patrolling the border with Poland to try to prevent the entry of immigrants. The suspects were armed with pepper spray, a machete, a bayonet and several batons.
The initiative comes from a group called Tercera Vía, a far-right party allegedly linked to neo-Nazi groups that has asked its supporters to stop immigration around the town of Guben.
The weapons were seized and the individuals , from different parts of Germany, were invited to leave the area between Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning, the Police explained.
Dozens of people gathered in Guben on Saturday to demonstrate against the far-right patrols. In addition, the Police have sent 800 additional officers to the border with Poland.
“Hundreds of agents are there on duty day and night. If necessary, I am prepared to send even more reinforcements, “Interior Minister Horst Seehofer told the newspaper ' Bild am Sonntag'.
So far this year there have been 6,162 unauthorized entries from Poland, according to Seehofer, who has defended keeping the border open although the establishment of controls could be studied.
