Germany: at least three dead and five seriously injured in knife attack in Würzburg

At least three people have died and another five have been seriously injured in an attack in Germany, in the town of Würzburg , in Bavaria . The aggressor was a man armed with a knife who has already been arrested by the police after hitting him in the leg with a shot. As reported by the police authorities, the attacker was acting alone , so that after his arrest there are no longer any major problems for the population, although the main streets of the town of Würzburg remain closed at this time.

The attacker has been identified as a 24-year-old man from Somalia. He was an individual already known to the Police, since he had already been arrested in the past and was currently undergoing psychiatric treatment.

In addition to the five seriously injured – according to local information, it is not certain that all of them will survive – there are a few more minor injuries in the episode.

The incident began when, around five in the afternoon, the man entered a store in Woolworth – a chain of department stores – where knives are sold. There he got hold of one and stabbed the clerk. He left the store and kept stabbing everyone who came near him until he could be cut down.

In the images that have been collected in the recorded videos of the incident, the attacker is seen barefoot and armed with a large knife, as well as several citizens trying to arrest him.

“We have no evidence of any other attacker,” reported a police spokesman, who works on the aforementioned basis that it is a guy who was acting alone. The terrorist nature of this attack has not yet been confirmed.

The events took place after five in the afternoon in local time, in the central square of Barbarossaplatz. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder spoke at eight in the afternoon, calling the incident “terrible and shocking news.” We mourn with the victims and their families. We are next to the wounded ».

In this same city of Würzburg, Germany, a similar incident also occurred in 2016, then on a train heading to the city. The attacker on that occasion was a minor Afghan refugee, who wounded four people on board and a fifth on the platform before being killed by the police. The investigation then determined that it was an Islamist-inspired terrorist attack.

Würzburg is a city of 130,000 inhabitants located southeast of Frankfurt, in the Bavarian region, the largest in Germany.
