Goodbye Uber Rewards, hello paid subscription Uber One

Uber will close its free loyalty program, Uber Rewards, at the end of the year, with the aim of drawing its users’ attention to its paid subscription program: Uber One.

“Thank you for being a part of Uber Rewards. It’s been a great ride, but we’ve decided to end rewards soon as we shift our focus to the new Uber One membership program,” the company said in an email.

The company also highlighted that users will be able to continue earning points until the end of this month, while to enjoy Rewards benefits, such as discounts on trips or orders through Uber Eats, the date is until October 31.

Uber Rewards is a free program that was launched in 2018 for people to accumulate points after paying for some of the Uber services, with the purpose of using them later and obtaining better and better benefits.

The highest tier, Diamond, earned 1,200 points and delivered a better experience on the company’s apps without paying a premium, like free ride upgrades, higher-rated drivers and even three free Uber Eats deliveries.

The company did not explain the reason why it decided to close its free loyalty program, while some specialists considered that perhaps the company did not obtain the expected returns from this model.

What is Uber One and how much does it cost?

On the other hand, Uber One is a membership that offers subscribers travel benefits and home delivery of both food and supermarket products. In Mexico, this program was launched in mid-April of this year with a price of 70 pesos per month.

It is worth mentioning that Mexico is the first Latin American market where the program is available. According to company data, the countries where it currently operates are the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the United States and New Zealand, among others.

The objective of this membership, according to Gretta González, general director of shared rides at Uber Mexico, is for users to better plan their time, manage their expenses, in addition to “saving in their daily activities.”

What are the benefits of Uber One?

Paying the monthly membership implies benefits such as free deliveries at Uber Eats and Cornershop for orders over 159 pesos in restaurants and 500 pesos in supermarkets. In case the Uber Eats order exceeds the maximum arrival time, members can get 50 pesos in credits within the application.

Regarding trips, the subscription offers a 5% discount on all routes, access to the best qualified drivers, priority support to improve the user experience and exclusive access to available offers or promotions.
